Open Source is different from GPL. The GPL has requirements such as providing access to the 'preferred source for modification' of any GPL material that is distributed. Open Source just means that the source code was at some point made available, but the requirement to keep it available is not as strict as with the GPL. This, of course, varies from one Open Source licence to another. Technically the GPL is an Open Source licence, but not all Open Source licences are as strict as the GPL. Like Communism is a form of Socialism, but not all Socialist systems are Communist. There, mentioning Communism in the same paragraph should annoy the GPL fans! (I'm a GPL fan, by the way, but it isn't appropriate for doccumentation. For that I prefer the CC_by_sa licence.)
