Firefox 1.0 Linux on Gentoo has SVG plugin installed by default!!!!!!!!
Hello all,
I just opened an svg file by accident in Firefox 1.0 just to find that it displayed properly in my browser!!! Upon closer inspection I thought that I had setup svg to display in inkview, but no, I looked in the MozillaFirefox plugin folder and found these:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5632 Nov 18 04:20 libmozsvgdec.a -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1368 Nov 18 04:20 libmozsvgdec.la -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 8536 Nov 18 04:20 libmozsvgdec.so
Thus, could you all check to see if the Mozilla SVG is provided with your Firefox 1.0 install?
I am ecstatic with joy if this is installed by default on all Firefox 1.0 browsers, because that means we now have penetration into the world with SVG.
I have just ruled out that I built my Gentoo install of Firefox with SVG, as it is not an option. Thus, the gentoo ebuild builds the SVG plugin by default.
Hmmm...if you all could report if you have the SVG plugin on your install, it would be great to know to promote via our website.
In the end, we have to consider that our app's usefulness will scale dramatically if SVG is adopted by more user's. As of now we are using more as a meta-format not much unlike Illustrator using AI as a default format for creating illustrations. With viewing of SVG files on the web, so much more will be possible.

SVGs can be read by Galeon 1.3.18 but not Firefox 1.0 on Debian/Unstable. Galeon complains about `improperly' configured freetype (IIRC), and fails to display fonts.

I think I have no svg support in Firefox 1.0 in Gentoo 2004.3. No USE flag can specify that.

Ah yes. I remember staring in awe at the first CSS file I ever saw, and then seeing it actually WORK in a browser! Of course, everybody told me that it'd never catch on. :) I guess that can give us hope for SVG as well. While I don't see SVG on any of Microsoft's public roadmaps, it's a cool enough technology for me to warrant a "get a real browser" blurb on pages that use SVG. I can't wait!
For those that don't have an SVG enabled Firefox package in their distro, there are some builds here that you can grab. If you've ever "installed" (basically un-tarred) a nightly, using this should be a piece of cake. I usually put these in my home directory (/home/aaron/bin/firefox) so I can keep the stable version elsewhere on my system. Just FYI. :)

It would be nice if noises could be spread about this. About 6 months ago, I was told the next version of Windows would be based on a vector-graphics close to SVG... wether it will imply SVG playability is unclear to me but can't we make some hopes ?

typical for Microsoft - embraced and extended: http://msdn.microsoft.com/Longhorn/understanding/pillars/avalon/default.aspx...

Two points:
* Microsoft don't plan to update their browser for years.
* SVG appears to work badly, rather than failing altogether, in IE. (I think, it may have been the Adobe plugin.)
it's a cool enough technology for me to warrant a "get a real browser" blurb on pages that use SVG. I can't wait!
Please don't. This will be perceived as arrogance; it won't convince people to change browsers, it'll convince them to change websites.

Not everybody likes doing that (it's messy) :-(

If one stands in the path of a river, he will be swept away.
If one builds a dam in the path of a river, it may be diverted for a time. But when he is gone the dam will crumble.
It is far better to dig a channel and let the water do as it will.

Nice. I like that. :)
I also understand the reason for your statement Trent. The way I worded it made it sound like all the "the page best viewed with..." garbage. What I really meant is that I have a particular application that I'm either going to do in SVG or not do at all. In the case of my audience, this will generate about a thousand new Firefox users as everyone will want this functionality. As far as turning people away goes, I don't really mind as my site is the only one of it's kind in existance. They can't go elsewhere. <insert evil laugh> :)
So it's not really a matter of arrogance. I don't require a particular browser for my design, I simply code to the standards and mention that Firefox is what I use. I also realize that there won't be a major IE update until Longhorn (if then), but luckily Firefox runs nearly everywhere. I wouldn't even suggest that people use the Adobe SVG plugin - it simply doesn't work.
Hello,
I wouldn't even suggest that people use the Adobe SVG plugin - it simply doesn't work.
Last time I've checked Firefox's build-in SVG-support was inferior to the Adobe-plugin. Did this change?
