Is there any way to adjust Bezier curve helper points so that they remain aligned, i.e. they remain on a straigth line that runs over the central point? In this way, curves don't make sharp turns unless helper points are over the central point.
If this is not implemented, I could help with it if someone could point me to the file. I have already done this in a java plugin for ImageJ.

In node edit mode there are three buttons in the top toolbar that alter the node type between corner, smooth and symettric. you want smooth (the middle one) symettric is smooth but with equal handle lengths. The shortcut for make smooth is Shift+S in node edit mode.

I have another question, this time regarding object ungrouping: after ungrouping, I can't select one of the ungrouped objects directly; I have to click first on some other object or the background. Is this the expected behaviour ?

yes, the group was selected when you did the ctrl-U, so afterwards the objects which made it up are still selected. Just hit esc to deselect them.
