Hi --
Just checking out some of the new features in 0.47 and tried the new eraser tool with mixed success. Release notes say that there are two modes of operation: vector and 'bitmap', but no instructions on how to trigger one or the other. Tool seems to create a path which if placed on an object will sometimes erase it completely. No luck on getting it to partially erase an object (line, rectangle etc). 'Select' 'Delete' seems to deal with whole vector objects more efficiently, although the partial erase could be handy.

Hello
The two settings are in the toolbar at the top and appear when you select the eraser tool (besides the width slider). One is called "delete objects touched with eraser" the other is "cut out from objects" (i'm using a build from 6 september)

Thanks - I see that now
Functionality still is lacking for me though
1. eraser leaves a thin red trail where ever it goes - even with no button pressed 2. in vector mode it sometimes works - I have to draw a little red line right in the middle of the path I want to erase, or across it - 'touching' has no effect 3. in raster mode it leaves a big (depending on width setting) red blob on the 'erased' area
Anyone else having problems with this in OS X (or other OS)

I don't use the eraser but just tried it and yes, I get the same. thin red line where ever the mouse goes, without a button being pressed.
also set the size to 100 and it does not erase, it just puts a thick red line across the item it should delete.

Can the shape of the eraser be changed when in bitmap mode? Mine seems to be stuck as a calligraphic style brush.

The eraser tool only seems to work well with paths, when you use it over an object (in my case) it doesn't erase anything and the red traced paths stays on screen. Also using eraser on groups seems problematic

Can you guys be sure that there are bug reports entered for all this?
Thanks.

Yes, the problem with non-path objects and eraser in cut-out mode has been filled and confirmed.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/280479
As for the thin red line trailing behind the eraser tool, I am unable to reproduce the behaviour.
Jozef
I just loaded up Inkscape 0.47pre2 on Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 and the first time that I used the eraser tool on a rectangle there was small red path. The second time it wasn't there.
