Inkscape Release 0.40 Now Available
The official 0.40 tarball is now posted, and is available for download here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438
The Release Notes describing the changes are available here:
http://inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ReleaseNotes
At this time we are requesting all packagers to create and post packages for the release. Formal announcements for the release will be delayed until Monday evening in order to give a little time for packages to be created and tested.
We are also encouraging everyone to assist with the PR push to get word out about this release. If you're interested in writing an article on a topic related to Inkscape, this would be an excellent time to do so.

This might be slightly late, but I would like to recommend that the Windows package use the GTK-Wimp theme as default instead of the rather harsh looking default GTK theme. Most of the screenshots that use Windows seem to use this theme, and in my opinion it looks much better, and fits in better with the rest of the Windows programs. The first time I tried Inkscape I was a bit put off by the ugly theme, and would hate for others to think the same.

If GTK under Windows is anything like under Linux, the theme is determined by a combination of
* The theme engines installed (e.g. pixbuf, industrial). * The global .gtkrc * Each users' .gtkrc
Are any of those under Inkscape's control? Furthermore, if a user has installed other GTK programs and customized their theme, surely inkscape `doing it's own thing' would be more harmful than good?
Well, I have found that regardless of what GTK theme I use in the main GTK installation, Inkscape uses its own, as dictated by the gtkrc file in the Inkscape install folder. Which one is used is under Inkscape's control. What bothered me most at first was that regardless of the theme a person uses for all other GTK programs, Inkscape did not respect them. It seems that (forgive me if I get this wrong) Inkscape under Windows is staticly linked with GTK, as no GTK installation is required to use Inkscape, and thus any custom themes are useless unless the are explictly installed to the Inkscape folder (under etc\gtk-2.0\gtkrc I believe). Also, Inkscape ships with the GTK-Wimp theme, but doesn't use it. I understand the "doing its own thing" idea, but right now Inkscape seems to do its own thing anyway.
Sorry if this comes across a bit strong.

Inkscape includes a whole seperate copy of GTK. This means a simple and straightforward single package. This is good for testing and as things stand there has not been an official stable release so we do want people to update regularly and test things.
That said it would be nice to have a version of Inkscape that used the shared GTK (and to still retain the existing all in one package for testers) but at the moment I think it is more important to have a package that is easy to distribute and install and so that people will be able try it out and not be asking about missing pieces or needing to do a two (or more) stage install.
GTK Wimp has some annoying font problems on certain versions of Windows. If we switched over we would certainly be hearing about them instead (probably worth it but anyhow ...)
With previous versions of Inkscape I was able to follow the GTK Wimp instructions and if you put gtkrc files and other in the right place (relative to Inkscapes copy of GTK, not the shared copy of GTK) they will work.
