I'd like to propose two things regarding the Inkscape web site. Volunteers are welcome:
1 Create an RSS feed for the main page news.
2 Create a new header graphic to replace the boring white "Inkscape" on blue. As a graphic app, we are starting to deserve something more sophisticated. The web site itself is OK, I don't think we need to drastically change the entire design (although suggestions are welcome), but the top panel is decidedly dull and pathetic. Show off your graphic talent! Send your submissions to the devel list for people to discuss. The best one (if the winner is not obvious, we may need to do a voting) will make it to the site. One technical note: the banner cannot be fixed width, because our site is not fixed width - so it must be either one piece for the top left corner or two pieces for two corners, with some flat color fill between them. The minimum screen resolution is 800x600.

The minimum screen resolution is 800x600.
;-(
sniff, sniff...
My poor old Sidekick is only 240 x 160
But more seriously, even though my screen resolution is 1152x864 at the moment, I generally have my browser windows at a 'portrait' layout, and thus smaller. At the moment the last one I was using is 759 x 815, and that's without subtracting for the borders, scrollbar, etc.
Though 800x600 is probably a good 'best at' target, it'd be even better if the header could handle different sizes easily.
http://www.linux.com is an example of good header layout. Important things are in important places, and it's got lots of pretty graphics, but it still works well for my default narrower size and for full-screen.

I'll take the rss feed work on...not too hard...you can assign it to me...

Sweet I'll have a go

I think the site would benefit from more colour and a contrasting (i.e., serif) font as per attached; but I think others with greater graphic skills than me are required!

I'm going to post on the DeviantART account about this... I think that it would be a good opportunity for people to contribute back to the project. I will make it known that we are accepting submissions from other sources other than DA, so people don't get their hopes up... but I do have to say that the attention that account has gotten is truly phenomenal. In the end the submission that gets chosen will make some artist pretty proud, given the fact that it will be on our website.
My Q, is should we just make it a header graphic for the website? Or should we maybe propose people also contribute the text portion to our logo? Meaning, we have an inkscape logo, but don't have set lettering or fonts for the word Inkscape itself... which is a pretty common practice with all software (the text logo & symbol logo).
Let me know so I can post it. Thanks!

Great idea. Andy was working on something, but apart from that there was only one submission so far.

I don't think the standard text part of the logo (the spaced-out uppercase serif INKSCAPE) needs to be changed. It's decent, and logos should only be changed when there's a very good reason to do so. You can refer people to this page:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/inkscape/inkscape/share/screens/about....
where they can download all versions of our About screens for possible ideas and inspiration. They can also borrow things from those abouts to their designs.

let me contribute an opinion for the case when a font will be selected: is important to use a free font. this opinion is based on my experience on the OpenOffice.org community: is very hard for people to reproduce the logo (which mainly consist from the OpenOffice.org text, using a certain font and colors) in their own artwork. this is why right now several people request a change in the logo to use a free font, with the main candidate being Toga (Toga is a derivative of Bitstream Vera)
