Hmm. Could you send or upload screenshot(s) of how you're doing this?
I just knocked up a quick demo, I don't have my actual files with me. It shows part of a lizard, and a clone that I rotated by hand. I can adjust the shape of the leg so that it fits with itself, but it is an approximate eyeball process.

and if you want to see node positions, turn on midside markers on the clone path, you'll get one at every node.
