Hi there,
I compiled Inkscape from source and was exalted about the filters in the effect menu - they are fantastic!
So, I compiled a simple overview of the filters and what they produce:

Best,

Thomas,
Would you be interested in helping the documentation team by writing a short description of each effect and saving your images individually for use in the manual? (even just the images would help, but I figured if you're excited about it, you might want to help more ;)
If you're interested, I can even help you write the chapter yourself in the Floss Manuals Inkscape manual.

Dear Joshua,
I think, I can write that part of documentation. But someone has to correct my english :-)
What format(s) do you need? How long should it be?
Best,
Tom
Thomas,
Probably the best thing would be to just send an email with each effect listed and what it does. Also attach each image (with the same dimensions) named by their effects.
If you are interested in helping do more with the documentation, we don't have a German translation yet (though prokoudine can also work on it). If so, you might want to also join the inkscape-docs list. In fact, if you write this in German and send it along with an English translation, that would be really cool.
Thanks for helping!

Hello Joshua,
the next two weeks I'm on holiday and will spend a lot of time in trains, there I'll write the texts for the filters :-)
At the moment, I have already some open tasks (I'm also working a little bit on the new Scribus manual, and, ah yes, there's a PhD thesis which have to be written ..), so, I can't promise anything. But if i'll have some time in the future, it would be glad if I can help a little bit.
Best,
Tom
Thomas,
no problem. Unfortunately :) I have a life as well, which means I can't spend 24 hours a day working on our Inkscape manual :(
Whatever you can do whenever is much appreciated. Your thesis is obviously more important.

Hi Joshua,
I compiled some examples of the Inkscape filters, together with some very short descriptions. My englis is not the best, so I think, it needs some polish ;-)
In fact, I think that the most filters are speaking for themself and they not really need adescription?
And it seams so that some of the filtes are not working properly at the moment, I added just "???" in that cases. From time to time, I'll compile new developer versions ... ah yes, and here is the file:
http://www.thomas-zastrow.de/inkscapeFilters.tar.gz
Hope it helps.
Best,
Tom
Ah sorry, I forgot, just untar the file and take a look at inkscapeFilters.html
Best,
Tom
And again, it wasn't my itention to send these mails to the whole list ...I'm sorry for that ...
But here is the package of the filter preview unpacked so that you can take a look directly at the examples:

Best,
Tom
