Nicer SVG support outside Inkscape?
Hello,
This is more of a whish than anything else, but perhaps raising the issue will grab some attention from the developers of other SVG rendererers out there.
The basic problem is that graphics generated with Inkscape usually don't display just as nice in other platforms --- specifically, text kerning and colours and other properties get screwed up, as do images sometimes.
This is an important blocker to the creation of SVG wallpapers, or icons that contain some of the poorly supported features, or for using SVG and Inkscape for purposes other than illustration.
Right now I am preparing a presentation, for example. It isn't too much of a fuss to pass a series of commands through the terminal and generate PNG versions of all the SVGs, but it would just be a smoother process if I could take any image viewer (like Ristretto or Gthumb) and cycle through the images.
Inkview does a great work in representing the SVG from Inkscape accurately. So, my question is: why aren't other projects borrowing code from Inkview and using it to paint their own SVGs?
There --- I told you it was more of a wish than anything else. :o)
Denís.
Hi Denís:
I am with you on that: better SVG support in a variety of applications would be highly desirable. The most improvements in their SVG support, I found with web-browsers lately. Mozilla and Webkit display most SVG images decently. The feature I am missing most with them are filters. I also agree with you, that it would be nice to be able to embed the Inkscape renderer in other programs, but I am not familiar enough with the code to judge how hard that would be.
As for your presentation: I believe there is a command line option (-- slideshow) in Inkscape to display and cycle through a list of SVG images. However, I haven't tried it, so I don't know how well it works. Other than that you can have a look at a pet-project of mine (http://code.google.com/p/jessyink/), which allows to view presentations prepared using Inkscape in a browser. The drawback with the latter option is that you wouldn't get the Inkscape renderer.
Cheers, Hannes

It would be very helpful if you could put up a page with links to some problematic SVGs, plus for each one a PNG rendered in Inkscape and some PNGs rendered in other named programs, with brief comments on the rendering differences.
