It would be nice if the icons in the menus and such were themable; I've been making changes to the global icons.svg, but I'd like to put it in ~/.inkscape/ to affect a user-only change.
Any chance on doing something like this as-is, or eventually making it possible?

Yup, in fact it's on the todo list for the gtkmm work:

See the Theming section, and please add your own thoughts for the feature there, including how it should work from a user perspective.

Wow, devs that want to hear what their users think? No, it can't be...! :)
I'll add my thoughts later, but looking at it quickly, it sounds good already.
I thought of this because I contribute to an icon theme whose developers/ contributors use Inkscape almost exclusively; it would be nice to have icons at hand as a bit of hat-tipping. :P
