Hello everybody,
I created some artwork a while back ago, and needed to create a new version of it. So I opened the *.svg documents but the text is wrong. All text is is put on the same character.
Can somebody please take a look at the files, and maybe help me with a solution and explanation.

Looking inside the source (with a text editor), it seems like you used everywhere a font named "Courier 10 Pitch". How it was supposed to be?
Hey Nico, I guess that's the issue. For me it looks like Jelle used Arial, which is not by default installed in Linux. Did you install it once and the loose it along the line?

If the specific font is not available then the application will replace it with something else, based on a guess and what is available.
The text used in those documents is like this (note font-family:Courier 10 Pitch, and this is the same for *all* text objects): style="font-size:9.00000095px;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;font-weight:normal;font-stretch:normal;text-align:end;line-height:120.00000477%;writing-mode:lr-tb;text-anchor:end;fill:#ff0000;fill-opacity:1;stroke:#ff0000;stroke-opacity:1;font-family:Courier 10 Pitch"
If there were supposed to be some different fonts, then is a problem and the SVG may be already damaged. He may need an older version or some manual work to repair.

The fontstype is correct, Courier 10 Pitch is the one, I thought this one was installed and floss on every system, thats why I choose it in the first place.
The file seems to be correct and undamaged like it was when i created it.
I know the stroke is a bit strange I did this to make the fonts a bit thicker, but this want not needed.
I am also extremely sorry I send the wrong *.pdf file in the previous email. This was the file I got back from my printer. They does not support non adobe software. I am still looking for a good printer that support other software in the Netherlands.
I attached the correct *.pdf file in this message.
Kind regards,
Jelle

I did not change anything in the file, did not change to font

Looking inside the source (with a text editor), it seems like you used everywhere a font named "Courier 10 Pitch". How it was supposed to be?
I have attached some files with the result of the files like they were in the past.
Thanks for your message, I appreciate any help.

On my system, tour target PNG (viewed with eog) looks identical with what Inkscape renders - http://nicubunu.ro/pictures/powercraft.png The PDF (viewed with evince) is not identical but very similar with what Inkscape sees (probably because the PDF was created with Distiller) http://nicubunu.ro/pictures/powercraft1.png
My best guess: you don't have the correct font installed on your system.

Hi, indeed. I just tested the document under Fedora 8 and it was loaded perfectly.
I used Ubuntu and there the document is wrong. I think it's a big bug because. Courier 10 Pitch should be installed! How can I determine this correctly?
Kind regards,
Jelle

I found the problem, horizontal text is not render correctly on my system, vertical text goes fine.
I don't know how to fix it.

I found the problem, horizontal text is not render correctly on my system, vertical text goes fine.
Usually when all the characters of a text are drawn in the same place that is because the program (doesn't matter if it's Inkscape or something else) can not determine each character's width. That's mostly because the font is not installed correctly (this includes the case when the font file itself is broken).
Vertical text rendering fine doesn't mean anything because the program doesn't need to know the width of the character in this case.
As for why you don't have the font, I don't know. My Ubuntu system has it. I don't think there's a rule about which fonts should be included in a Linux distro. Probably some simply are and some are not. Might depend on the distro, or the version, or even which desktop is used (I use Gnome). Maybe someone else more versed in Linux standardization efforts can shed more light on this.
In any case if you want to make sure you can display an SVG correctly on another system than the one it was created with, install the font yourself or convert all your text to curves (in which case you will not be able to change it with the text tool anymore).

Ok, my excuses, my suggestion was appearently not right... :D
But, I think there IS a rule about which fonts are installed in Linux and which aren't, that's why I made the mistake in the first place. There is something called something like "Windows core fonts", or "windows web package" that once used to be freely available from the MS site. This package has Arial, Tahoma, Verdana, Georgia and Trebuchet. Although it still might be distributed in its original form (as a package), the fonts are officialy not allowed to be distributed in any other form, f.e. in a Linux distribution. So, once you installed Linux you are perfectly able of copy-ing the TTF's into Linux from Windows, but they're not installed by default by any law-fearing suplier. I might be slighlty of the point with the technicalities or the naming, but it _does_ boil down to something like this...

I just did some more testing, and all my horizontal text with all fonts types and all font sizes are not rendered correctly when using them. Vertical text goes correctly with all fonts.
With the Gimp and OpenOffice I can also correctly type horizontal text.
I will do some more testing when I got some freshly installed ubuntu and fedora machines.
Tanks for all the feedback,
Kind regards,
Jelle

I just tested inkscape on a fresh install of ubuntu and it works fine there. So the problem is on my system. I just don't know how to fix it.
I run the below command: sudo fc-cache --verbose --force
Then I rechecked if the font was installed correctly: fc-list
Courier 10 Pitch:style=Italic
Then I rechecked the suggested packages: apt-cache show inkscape
And I installed them: sudo aptitude install libxml-xql-perl python python-xml skencil libwmf-bin pstoedit imagemagick perlmagick python-numpy
No success so far so I removed inkscape from the system and reinstalled it: sudo aptitude purge inkscape sudo aptitude install inkscape
However the problem still remains.
Does somebody have any idea's how to fix the problem?
Thanks for all the feedback,
Kind regards,
Jelle
Hei!
Ik kan ze perfect openen, op WinXP v. 045.1 Ik zie dat je Linux gebruikt hebt; mischien dat het op een of andere vreemde manier daar aan ligt. Zal ik je PNG's sturen?
Hey, I can open them on WinXP 0.45 I see you've been using Linux. Some sort of weird OS issue maybe?
Greetings / Groeten,
Maarten
