Hello -
I am new to Inkscape.
I am trying to enter a Unicode character into text. While text is selected I press ctrl-U but this terminates the text rather than going into Unicode mode. Has the function of ctrl-U been changed in current versions of Inkscape?

It's working fine for me using Inkscape 0.91 (64-bit) on Windows 7. This sounds like an issue on a specific platform or a shortcut conflict. What OS and Inkscape version do you use?

If on Windows, using Alt and the right numpad is usually the way to do it. In GNOME, I use Control-Alt-Shift-U to key in a Unicode codepoint using the numrow (I do not have a numpad, being on a laptop). To my knowledge Unicode (UTF8) text can be used in SVG or in an Inkscape text object at any time, so I do not believe one has to enter a 'Unicode mode' to enter such characters, but perhaps you (John) meant the OS interface to specify a codepoint and have the resulting character entered as if typed by a keyboard. -Arlo James Barnes

Many thanks - in the Windows 7 binary installation I find that Control-Alt-Shift-U, then a number, then Return, enters a Unicode character into text. It is not the one I want, which may be due to the font I have selected, but clearly it is the way to go. (What I want is the vulgar fraction 1/2 so I may be asking for trouble).

Another way to do it is to copy the character from some web reference. If you hit http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/bd/index.htm
You can scroll down and look under the 'Java Data' section. That also helps to determine if the font in question is an issue as you no longer have to do special input.

It looks like Inkscape is blocking Alt + Numpad keys on Windows. What's the reason for that? File a bug report?

Would it be Inkscape or something else running on Windows?
I am a new user and I do not think I know enough to file a useful bug report - if it is a bug.

It's obviously related to Inkscape, because Alt+Numpad numbers is a general Windows function and only doesn't work in Inkscape. The question is whether that's a bug or intended behavior. If an Inkscape contributor verifies that this a bug, I am happy to file a related bug report.
