I can not choose a fill color

Hi,
when I draw a box, it is transparent (the border is colored ok).
This is what i see in "Fill and stroke":
I tried to choose "Remove fill", but when i set a color again, the squares pattern on the left keeps in "Fill:" (look at the image) in "Fill and stroke".
0.48 and Ubuntu 12.10.

could you show a complete screenshot of the Fill and Stroke dialog with the Fill tab selected? What is the opacity of this object (the A value in RGBA)?
