Dear everybody,
I have read about all the wonders that so called extensions can add to Inkscape, but nowhere can I find any descriptions of what extensions are, or how to find/install/activate them. I have downloaded the Mac distribution (0.44), and there is a folder called extensions and a set of files with interesting names, so I think that the extensions are there. However, I see no traces of them in the user interface.
What are extensions? What extensions are there? Where can I find them? How do I install/activate/use them?
Best regards,
MagnusG!

I'm not 100% sure about this but I think extensions are any type of feature that is not coded in, but instead use an external scripting language. Most or all of the existing extensions can be found in the "effects" menu, but I suppose extensions could be placed in any menu if the extension's programmer wanted it to. (this is determined by the contents of the inx file). If you don't have such a menu, download a more recent build or open the inkscape preferences and look for an option to turn the effect menu on (this was a test feature in earlier builds and was considered "experimental").

As far as I remember, the extensions should be activated in preferences in this version. Otherwise you may install the 0.44.1 version via Fink, with adds parts of the extension in the effects menu, another part in import or export submenu of file menu. For either versions, to get the benefit of all extensions on Mac, you have to install: - Gimp (It will only work if you install gimp and inkscape via fink, not if one of them or both are installed as native Mac OS X applications, at least I never found a way to make it work) - for dia input: dia (also patched in Fink, probably only in 0.44, I think the change has been made in source for 0.44.1) - for sketch, postscript, eps input: sketch, skencil, pyxml - for the latex formula extension: probably tetex + pstoedit 3.44 (available in fink). Notice that the version of the extension in fink is patched to make it work with the pstoedit sdk driver. - for xfig input: xfig - for dxf input: dxf2svg (available in fink) - for wmf: libwmf (specifically the shared library and the binary part of the package in fink)
The pdf output produces a 1.4 pdf file, not viewable with Preview, but with evince. A workaround is to open it with ImageMagick and save it as pdf 1.3 file, then Preview will open it.
I never found the utility needed for random point and random position.
