Hi,
I have posted some screen shot of Freehand MX's gradient palettes. They can be seen here:

Excellent!
I've gathered together everyone's comments, screenshots, and so forth onto this wiki page: http://inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ObjectManager
The next step is for someone(s) to do some creative thinking, taking all these ideas and suggestions, and generate a concept for what the *best* *possible* gradient editing system would be. Use the screenshots as inspiration, but don't feel compelled to just recreate them.
I sense that for Inkscape, the gradient editing is going to be one of the most fundamental and critically important pieces of functionality, and it will be well worth investing a lot of time in it. I would love to see the gradient editor become Inkscape's "Crown Jewel". :-)

Hi folks, it's great to see so much interest in creating a generic floating dock interface for various properties.
While I'm about 120% busy with pumping out artwork for our product line, I'm trying to find some idle time to write down some useful use scenarios for the gradient editor.
It's nice to see what other illustration packages do for gradients, but designing an interface based on what others do is a very narrowed approach. What we need is a complete functional specification that addresses the most common use patterns and workflows. The wiki is a great place for this.
As a sidenote I think we need to extend the HIG to incorporate some floating dock controls specification. Using the default window spacing and font sizes clutters the screen estate too much. Apple has a section on this type of widgets (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/OSXHIGuid...).
cheers
