Hey JiHO (I am not on the user's list):
yes, this is why I figured I would include you personally in the email.
Can you send me the file in question? I am very curious to know if this is Mac only or Windows and Linux too. Did you try it out yourself?
Nick, can you do that please? Ideally you should send: - the original files where the fonts used to display fine (apparently you made a backup if I understand you correctly) - the files that show the problem - the font(s) used in those files. The fonts live in /Library/Fonts or /System/Library/Fonts or /Users/yourname/Library/Fonts
Even zipped, all this together may be big. If you have facilities to upload it somewhere and send the link it would be nice, otherwise... well make several zip files ;). Please send the attachment to Gail and me only (no attachments to the list) but keep posting follow ups to the list (as I did on this one), so that people know something is happening and the final fix can be found later.

I am using OS 10.4.11, Inkscape .45. I started working on a file and used a specific font. Then I discovered that my effects are not working, so I had to download a newer build of Inkscape from http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/ along with the python packages. I reinstalled Inkscape and got the effects working, but when I opened my old file, the fonts have changed to something generic, and I cant get them to go back to what they were! I rolled back to the older version on Inkscape, but that did not fix the problem.
Could you perform these little tests, with the document that has the generic font and on both version of Inkscape:
- select the faulty text, open the xml editor and check what the
font attributes are (name, weight etc.)
- check wether you see the font in the text and font palette (even
if it's not used in the document)?
- if you see it, what happens when you select the text and apply
this font?
All my previous work with that font got messed up (I still have the original files in hopes of getting this to work.) Does anyone know how to get my fonts to work again?
Font got reworked between those two versions and the library that deals with fonts was also updated, but all that should have improved compatibility, not the contrary. Gail, could you look at that please?
2nd part of the question: And if I get new fonts, how do I add them to Inkscape running on OSX?
All depends on the format of the font. If you get a ttf font in a regular format (ttf extension) Inkscape should be able to see it. Inkscape has issues with fonts in the dfont format and with Microsoft Font Suitcases (no visible extension). If you install the font on your Mac the regular way (double click and click install), Inkscape should have acces to it. To force the refresh of the font library on startup, delete a file via a command in Terminal: rm ~/.inkscape/.fccache-new Inkscape will rebuild the font cache on next startup.

Hey people,
I'm trying to use the blur function, but it doesn't realy want to work. I either get way too much blur or no blur at all, but on both cases the slider stick on the zero value. Neither can I increment the counter-box at the rigth-hand side of the slider. I don't know if this matters, but I'm working on "pixel" scale (icons, 32 pixels width).
Has anybody noticed this problem before? Is there a work around? I tried manually editing the 'standard-deviation' value in the XML file, but nothing happened either.
I'm curious about the answer!

Hi Everyone
Sorry for the slightly off topic post. I wanted to purchase an entry level tablet. Does anyone know of one that is being sold in stores now that works well with Inkscape?
Thanks in advance-Patrick

I've had good luck with my Wacom Graphire3 tablet under Ubuntu. I think most if not all of the Wacom tablets are fairly well supported under the last couple of releases of Ubuntu. Can't speak for other distros, but Wacom seems to be the prevalent product.
Be wary that the Graphire is quite small (4x6 I think), you might want to look at the Intuos line if you want something bigger and better featured.

Well, not sure how big of a tablet that you want but I have a Wacom 4x6 USB that works well with Gimp and Inkscape (works on Windows, Ubuntu and openSUSE). It's really tiny but my wife claim size doesn't matter...it's how you use it. ;)

I bought an Intuos 3 6x8" recently, using it with Inkscape in Ubuntu linux 7.10. It seems to work well, although oddly enough I think it would work better with an Nvidia graphics card than my ATI graphics card. At least if you have multiple monitors. ATI's driver support for multiple monitors seems to be less refined than Nvidia's (having used Nvidia cards on other dual monitor linux machines). Of course it's an old ATI card (9800pro), maybe they do better on new ones. The issue is mapping screen geometry, which is important for the graphics tablet.
Cheers -Terry
One word of warning is to be careful of the wacom bamboo, we've had a number of users reporting issues with that tablet. btw, I wouldnt say its off topic at all, very relevant question.

What version of Inkscape are you using? I believe there was a problem like what you describe a while ago and it has been fixed. Could you try the lastest stable version from www.inkscape.org? Mine is Inkscape 0.45.1, built Mar 21 2007 and work great.
Hope it helps.
