extensions still don't work

I installed 0.45 (just unpacked the .zip file) and was hoping to be able to use the 'groups to pngs' script now, but always get an error when running it. (the error message ends with: File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages_xmlplus\sax\xmlreader.py", line 121, in parse buffer = file.read(self._bufsize) IOError: [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor
I understand the effects are is dependent on python installation or something, but I can't get it working. In the readme file there is something about extension-dependencies, but it's way over my head, I really don't see what I need to do from that text. Is there any way for a simple non-technical graphics-program-user to just install inscape and get the extensions working on a windows-machine?

The error indicates that Inkscape is not using the included python bundle to run the effects. We ship python with Inkscape in order to avoid issues like this. Where did you download the zip file? Is there a folder called "python" in the root inkscape directory?

That's usually the way it works.

In 0.45pre2 the effects didn't work either, and then I installed Python24.
Sorry I missed your report the first time.
I uninistalled Python24 from the Add/remove programs window, and then unzipped the new 0.45-1 version to the C;\Program Files\Inkcape path (it's just unzipping, doesn't really ' install' anything) It does indeed give me a folder called python. If I run the /groups to pngs /script I get an error message which refers to the non-existing C:\Python24. Also, Inkscape then freezes
C:\Python24 doesn't exist? The messages would seem to indicate otherwise. I'm at a bit of a loss as I don't know how inkscape was set up to locate the relative python in preference to the platform python.
Can anyone else reproduce this?
Can anyone else offer any debugging suggestions?

Maybe I am confused, but I got the impression from the above that Arthur had a C:\Python24, got the errors mentioned in his first post, then uninstalled the Python that was installed there, then installed the Python that came with Inkscape 0.45 in C:\Program Files\Inkscape, and now gets error messages referring to the no-longer-there C:\Python24. That is, Inkscape is still trying to use Python from the wrong directory.
I've never used the Windows Inkscape, but I imagine there is a configuration option somewhere that tells it where to find Python. I suspect that it only got confused in this case because Python is in a different place to where it was when Inkscape was installed.
But I could be off in a world of my own.

Is your previous install of python still referenced in your $PATH by chance?

thanks for the reply, but have pity on an illiterate who just wants to use the program for graphical work. No idea what $path means

Don't sweat it... :) If you're on XP this is what you do to check...
1) Right-click on "My Computer" and choose "Properties". 2) When System Properties dialog comes up, click on the "Advanced" tab. 3) Click on the "Environment Variables" button toward the bottom of the dialog. 4) In the System Variables section (bottom half of dialog), there is an entry for "Path". Select that and press the "Edit" button.
If you see anything referencing python in that line, remove it. It would look something like "C:\Python24;". Hit OK, close the opened windows, and it will require a restart.
Let us know if you saw it there and if it fixes the problem for you.

There is nothing about Python in preferences of windows-inkscape. Since this windows inkscape is not installed, just unzipped, I suppose it should point to the python version in it's own directory.

Just a little bit. :-)
I did some checking. Inkscape on windows does the following to locate a python interpreter:
1) checks a python-interpreter string value from the preferences file (I dont' believe this value is set anywhere, would need to be entered by hand.) 2) checks for a python/python.exe relative to the python executable 3) checks for python.exe in the system path
The reason I don't believe that C:\Python24 has been removed is because the error message pasted was a python backtrace (not an Inkscape error at all) that lists the full path of the files that python is actually running. I'm not sure python would continue to produce a phantom pain backtrace after you cut off its limbs. :-)

well, anyway: after I uninstalled C:\Python24 there is no reference anymore in the errorlog, so phantom pain is gone. Still it doesn't run the 'groups to pngs', or e.g. radiobutton effects. It does however run tor instance the Render/lorus ipsum script, so I assume the right python is running, some of the scripts just don't work, or some library part is missing.
errorlog for groups to pngs now is:

Excellent, we've got the right python now.
I found a bit of time to try reproducing this here and did some debugging. Looks like the groups to png extension was written and tested entirely on linux. :-)
For the python fans out there this is what I get when I print out sys.argv for various invocations of the --directory parameter:
c: yeilds ['share\extensions\g2pngs.py', '--directory=c:" --layers=false C:\DOCUME~1\NS\LOCALS~1\Temp\ink_ext_MSLKNT']
. yeilds ['share\extensions\g2pngs.py', '--directory=.', '--layers=false', 'C:\DOCUME~1\NS\LOCALS~1\Temp\ink_ext_YPU4MT']
Something's broke!
But I find that if I call with "c:\" INCLUDING DOUBLE QUOTES, I am able to successfully export pngs to c:.
With quotes and double backslashes you might be able to work around the issue for now. But please file a bug in the tracker and copy in the relevant information from this thread.
