[OS X] X11 clipboard vs. OS X pasteboard
X11 (Xquartz) v.2.3.x has several preferences to sync between OS X Pasteboard and X11 CLIPBOARD and PRIMARY buffers.
While testing 0.46+devel rev21339 I noticed that in Inkscape copying/pasting to/from the clipboard always resulted in bitmaps with all vector information lost (no Paste Style, Paste Size possible) - restoring default Inkscape preferences didn't help.
It seems that the X11 preference 'Update Pasteboard when CLIPBOARD changes' somehow prevents Inkscape from keeping vector information in the clipboard even when ^C/^V objects/shapes in one drawing or between 2 windows.
Unchecking said option in X11 disables clipboard xfer from Inkscape to native OS X applications and restores full Inkscape functionality.
Can someone verify on a updated system (10.5.6 with X11 2.3.2 or 10.5.7 with X11 2.3.3) if the 'out-of-the-box' installation disables Inkscapes native clipboard functions? I could not find related infos in Inkscape Wiki or launchpad answers/bugs.

That's right, this options is turned on by default. I'll try check on the X11 mailing-list what was planned regarding copying something other than text. For now, I've added a FAQ.

That's the way to go for now. Here is the reply I got from the X11 mailing list at Apple:
It is a known problem.
It is not at the top of the heap, but I do hope to address it sometime during the 2.4.x release cycle.
Given the frequency of releases, I would guess that the 2.4 series will not start before another 8 to 12 months :(

Thanks for investigating! The bad thing is - it's inconvenient and irritating for new users. The good news is - you can toggle the option without the need to restart X or Inkscape, employing a one resp. two-way xchange with native apps.
For those who use GIMP _and_ Inkscape, maybe running multiple dedicated X11.app servers as explained in the X11-UsersFAQ http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X11-UsersFAQ#Example:AdedicatedserverforTheGimp: is the way to go until the release of XQuartz 2.4?

update: changing X11 Preferences causes cut&paste problems Ticket #271 (closed usability: fixed) http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/ticket/271
released: Localization updates for 2.3.3.2 and 2.1.6 [2009.05.28] http://static.macosforge.org/xquartz/downloads/X11-Locales-2.3.3.2.dmg
It seems that without installing the update, enhanced syncing settings are not accessible for users with locale ≠ En. For those who don't see the new Pasteboard preferences tab, the description in the FAQ might be confusing.

Indeed I noticed that. Could you please update the wiki?

Never done that before. Any guidelines to watch?
Just open an account, log into the wiki. You'll see small edit links next to all the sections. Select the [Edit] fot appropriate question and edit the text in the page that opens. There is a link to a syntax sheet.
Thanks in advance.

btw - found a related bug report (hidden because marked as duplicate) 'copy command always does bitmap copy' https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/307005
How would you decide its status? In general, do you (i.e. inkscape developers) keep reports like this open?

It usually is a good idea to keep one open, with the solution/ workaround in the comments, so that people don't keep reporting the same bug.
