Hi,
We are planning to do some redesign work on export bitmap palette and export in common.
We'd like to know better how you use "export to bitmap" function, what you're missing and what is your way to do export.
Basically, we see two ways of exporting:
1. Common "Export.." dialog, where file formats will be listed and option dialog will raise upon choosing of of them.
2. Current "Export to bitmap" palette for those people who do export to some bitmap file format all the time.
What we need is decent descriptions (use cases) of your workflow a propos exporting.
Another important thing is batch export. If you need batch exporting, please provide us information, what is the best way to do batch export in ian application like Inkscape according to your experience.
Thank you in advance.

So when you prepare your areas as explained in my comment there, perhaps all we need to add is an "Export All in Layer" command that would batch-export all objects from the current layer.

Actually for my use shell scripting as per your comment will work fine. Thanks for taking the time to write up that tip. But I can see how a gui export "Export All in Layer" command would be useful for those less inclined to shell scripting. Web designers could do much more than just mockup using inkscape with a feature like that. I haven't tried a batch export yet. so far it seems like this feature would require some training material for those who wish to use it because it doesn't sound like an intuitive process that one would just stumble upon.
I'm just a wannabe web designer at best. I think you should ask Artemio about his workflow. The website says, "Artemio displays several websites he's designed using Inkscape for drawing the site and Gimp to cut it up into component pieces."
What other classes of inkscape users would use batch export? Clip-artists and icon designers? There was talk about this in relation to icons.svg a while back. People were looking for a way to draw objects in a single file to better keep a standard look. Of course that sounds like a desire for SVG export not bitmap export.

Ideally it would open a window with a list of all objects, each one taking one line, showing the "export" checkbox (default on for all objects), the id, the filename (editable, and displaying differently depending on whether it's taken from a stored hint or constructed from the id), and the resolution/w/h (also editable). You can then uncheck anything you don't want to export, edit the filenames if necessary, and click Export.

check all/uncheck all buttons?

Sounds like a dream to me. I'm surprised there isn't more people sounding off on the idea.

This sounds tiresome for me; imagine you want to do this more than once (because you had to fix something in the image). There should be a way to store this in the SVG file saved by Inkscape so I can do the same export operation again and again.
What I would like to see is this:
1. Export frames/groups
With each frame or group, you can specify the filename, format and the size (if it's a bitmap format). When you export, you are presented a list of all these frames and groups which inkscape remembers, so you can do the same process over and over again.
Frames would have an advantage over groups because I could create "whitespace" around the group. If there are "export groups" only, people will have to put a dummy background element to get the desired size. Maybe not a problem.
This would be useful for icons: Just draw all of them and put them into different export groups/frames. During export, Inkscape will write one file for each of them.
With powerful "style" support (read: give values in dialogs a name and then reuse them), people could attach such "styles" to export groups. Then I could have a style "32x32 icon" and one "64x64 icon" and one "svg icons". During export, I'd just select the styles in a selector in the dialog and always get the same results.
With the help of helplines, frames could be positioned exactly and the resulting images would fit seamlessly.
2. Export by layer
Just put the various parts of the image into different layers and each layer will go into a separate file.
When you do this, you'll probably want to set the output format/size/etc. for all layers at once.
