Hello, here's an update on the website. We have made some nice progress and it is defiantly coming along. It's going to be launched in phases. Phase #1 will be the main site with all the content and Phase 2 will consist of various things for the user allowing them to be able to post their own tutorials and plugins etc. However in order to do that we need help! We need the following:
1. content writers to go through the site and improve on the existing write ups. 1. Additional old news needs to be ported over. We ported over all of 2010 and 2011 but we need all news ported over 2. Django developers to finish up the last few features
After all that 3. we need translators to translate the various parts of the website You can follow the project here: https://code.launchpad.net/~inkscape-webadmin/inkscape-web/inkscape-web Also the site is visible at http://dev.inkscape.org please feel free to drop by on irc.freenode.net and join #inkscape-web Thanks, Ian Caldwell

Nice but you're using fixed sizes. I have my minimum font size set to 16 so I can read it and the site has some problems, see attached.
Looks great! And thanks for your (ongoing) efforts. I'd love to contribute at least a few hours, but am unsure of what exactly is needed, perhaps you could be more specific? (In terms of what content is needed at this stage and instructions on how to add/modify it.)
One minor issue with the site I ran into: Below the main banner you have four "button-like" things (saying Overview, Features, Gallery and Learning Resources). It is not immediately obvious what these do, and if they are the first things people try on the site (as I did) the site feels dead (as in, not operational). The problem is that the left-most button doesn't appear to do anything and the other buttons "just" switch the main banner (which initially feels like it might have just been coincidentally). I can think of a number of possible (partial) solutions: - Make the buttons into links (so you don't have to click on another button to go where you actually want to go) - Don't make them clickable, just switch when hovering over them. - Make them look like "tabs" instead of "buttons"

Hi,
Those are tabs for a content slider, which encompasses the banner image and the buttons/tabs. The idea is that when you click the tabs the entire content of that banner changes to display relevant content, a very popular and common feature on modern websites. This has not yet been finished because I need some help as to what text and buttons to put in there - I'm not such a great copywriter :-). The overview section is meant to show new users particularly, what Inkscape is, what it can do, and lead them to either learn more or download directly. The other tabs will have similar stuff appropriate to their titles and descriptions.
Help concerning all content writing is most certainly welcome - much of the text on the new pages was written by me in my mockups, and duly transferred to the working version. Other parts (mostly for existing pages) were brought over directly from the current website, and more yet written by the great dudes doing the development. It could use some good tidying up in places, and other parts have no content at all for now...
I'm also still hoping some lovely people will record their screens while making art for me, so as to use it in the overview video on the About page. All participants will be credited. Anyone who wants to participate in this short video can contact me directly. Unfortunately if no one is willing to participate, the video will feature mostly my own work (not a desirable situation when we have such a large community), and a fantastic timelapse video sent to me by a Spanish artist named "Arwassa": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gRoxyu-zsc. I got that, but the problem is that they don't look like that. They look like ordinary buttons meant for navigation. My recommendation would be to make some minor changes in order to avoid such confusion (I gave a few examples, but I'm sure there are more ways).

I saw a few concrete suggestions/wishes in some other mails, but I have no idea of how to add content. No need for a complete manual or something, but a few pointers would be nice. Am I supposed to check out the "code"? If so, what do I get and how do I edit it?

Perhaps you can find material (or someone can suggest material) from a previous LGM (Libre Graphics Meeting) for the community stuff (at the last LGM an Inkscape workshop was held for example).

I experienced the same initial confusion - as described by Jasper - the first time I visited the new site at http://dev.inkscape.org. Once you have realized what those 'buttons' do, it's ok - but it isn't very obvious at first glance and (IMHO) unexpected from the way those 'buttons' are currently styled (maybe the initial draft [1] which had them spanning the complete banner width would be more obvious?).

Thank you both for your input, I appreciate it. I'll go back to the cave to come up with something more intuitive. :-) I had initially considered having the slider autorun (5 seconds or more between transitions, with a pause if you hover) but not too sure if this might just be annoying... I also considered having the usual progression arrows on the sides that show up when you hover over the banner...
Perhaps removing the slider functionality and making the tabs/buttons simply clickable links as you suggested would be more suitable.
I saw a few concrete suggestions/wishes in some other mails, but I have no idea of how to add content. No need for a complete manual or something, but a few pointers would be nice. Am I supposed to check out the "code"? If so, what do I get and how do I edit it?
I'm not entirely sure about that to be honest (I'm just writing stuff directly in the mockups) - the best thing would probably be to get in touch with the development side (via #inkscape-web on irc.freenode.net, or email Ian Caldwell who's kinda co-ordinating the thing). They'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Hello
I downloaded the attached icon. When I ungrouped this icon I came upon a semi transparent object. The trouble however is that I cann't seemed to select it.
So my question is: What kind of a object am I dealing with?
Any idea?
Greetings Jos

The objects are on a separate, locked layer. Open the layers dialog, unlock the layer "lights" and you can select the objects
Oliver
Thanks I never worked with layers in Inkscape. Now I have to.
Thanks again

a 'locked layer'
Open the 'Layers…' dialog (Shift+Ctrl+L) and unlock the layer 'lights': The hightlights (4 stacked circles with various gradients) can't be selected as long as the layer they are in is locked.

...and do not stop working on the new website until you test it under all of the popular web browsers. On Firefox (3.6.3) for example, some of the "boxes" are not large enough to hold the resident text. With the "Learning Resources" button the last word "Inkscape" is chopped in half by the bottom of the box.
Love Inkscape. Big fan.

Obviously it's still under development - otherwise it would be live on the main inkscape.org domain. I don't personally know anyone who launches websites without cross-browser testing... (by the way, I'm not doing the coding).

I'll let Chris know about that thanks. Which operating system do you use? (It looks fine on Firefox 3.6.13 on a Mac.)

Woah... I hadn't even noticed those were buttons until I read this. Those need to be changed indeed.
Perhaps making them smaller with not descrition txt and completely part of the banner would help. The description text could only show on mouse over.
Also arrows could accentuate the fact that you can go from one section to the other
Here is a mockup of what I mean http://sebby.cc/stuff/Screenshot-1.png

Since I volunteered as a German translator for the website I would like to have a look at that. Unfortunately (although I'm a software developer) I have now clue on how to do translations or testing of these translations.
I guess there is no sort of guide already but can someone give me some hints on how to get the site up and running on my machine for testing?
Also: Is there a plan on how to coordinate the translation?
Cheers, Andi
