Gimp, painter, illustrator and other graphics programs have had support for pressure sensitive tablets such as wacom for some time.
However inkscape-sodipodi appear not to have. Is there a reason?

Nope, I think we're just waiting for someone with an interest in that to have a shot at implementing support for it.
