I suggest access to the text tool be placed in the Text submenu
Hi all,
In the next version, I suggest access to the text tool be placed in the Text submenu, either right above or right below Text>Text_and_Font. So it would be Text>Text_tool.
I haven't looked at the source code in 7 years, but I think this would be as simple as adding menu item Text>Text tool and having it call win.tool-switch('Text') on left click.
Icons and hotkeys are wonderful time savers, but in my opinion they don't relieve the need of a functionality being reachable from the menu, so the functionality is reachable without dangerous trial and error.
Also, for some unknown reason, Shift-t didn't invoke the text tool, although F8 did. I tried looking for the key bindings, but all I found was in an extension called "Jesseink", and those weren't what was needed.
So what do you think? Would you be able to add the text tool to the text menu?
Thanks,
SteveT

Where would the select tool, the pen tool and all the other tools appear in the menu, then?
I see no reason to single out the text tool. I’m glad all the tools do not appear in the menu again, as that would increase the average time to access all the things that are only in the menu.

Oops, the problem's worse than I thought. Inkscape needs a tools menu.

Me neither.

I think every functionality should be in the menu. I'm advocating this in addition to, not as a substitute for, the hotkeys and the icons.
=================== TOOLS MENU =================================== Selector Tool Node tool Vector shape creators Shape builder tool Rectangle tool Ellipse tool Star/polygon tool 3D box tool Spiral tool Drawing/text tools Pen tool Pencil tool Calligraphy tool Text tool Color tools Gradient tool Mesh tool Dropper tool Text tool Effect tools Tweak tool Spray tool Eraser tool Connector tool Other tools Measure tool Zoom tool Pages tool
With this menu, by showing both the icon and the current key-combo hotkey, provides discoverable self-learning so the person can start with the menu and graduate to icons and/or hotkeys. It will also be good for people like me, whose glasses can correct only to 20/40 if that, who get confused because to their eyes a lot of the icons look alike.
