Re: [Inkscape-user] Installing inkscape
Well, I have just tried to install gtk+2-devel, but yast is now telling me I need to install gtk+2 = 2.1.0 and gtk-doc-common. As the error I got trying to install gtk+2 was that I need to install gtk+2 devel I am completely confused.
Thanks for taking the time so far, can you offer one final burst of illumination? Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: "Trent Buck" <fubarbaz@...104...> To: inkscape-user@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [Inkscape-user] Installing inkscape Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2005 03:16:54 +1100

First, apologies for my poor posting etiquette in previous post.
You're willing to learn, which is the important thing :-)
However I am still having trouble installing Inkscape to suse
9.1
Unable to install GTK+2 because it needs GTK+2 devel and I can't even find GTK+2 devel.
The gtk2-devel packages should be on one of the install CDs.
Otherwise,
try rpmfind.net
http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=gtk2-devel&system=sus...
Are there easier versions of sue or other distributions of linux
to
install inkscape on.
I think the problems you're experiencing are due primarily to inexperience rather than a `bad' distribution.

The gtk2 and gtk2-devel packages are built from a single source. They need to be the same version.
Since you installed gtk2, a newer version (2.1.0) has been released. gtk2-devel will not install unless gtk2 is ALSO at the current version. You need to upgrade the gtk2 package.
Note that most Linux distros, including SuSE, should resolve these problems for you. I suspect you haven't set up your update repositories correctly; to fix this you should find a local Linux guru and get her to have a look at it.
PS: Two more hints. 1) Replies go at the *bottom* of the message. 2) Your mailer is not setting the In-Reply-To header field correctly, preventing accurate threading on my end.

Hi Aaron,
I hope you have a fast internet connection.
Have a look at http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/home.html
Install APT.
Put these two lines into /etc/apt/sources.list:
rpm ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/9.1-i386 packman packman-i686 rpmkeys base update kde gnome xorg mozilla samba3 ximian suser-rbos suser-oc2pus suser-guru suser-gbv usr-local-bin suser-tcousin suser-scorot suser-sbarnin suser-jogley suser-ollakka labplot funktronics kernel-of-the-day wine suse-people suse-projects kde3-stable kde-unstable security
rpm-src ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt SuSE/9.1-i386 packman packman-i686 rpmkeys base update-prpm update kde gnome xorg mozilla samba3 ximian suser-rbos suser-oc2pus suser-guru suser-gbv usr-local-bin suser-tcousin suser-scorot suser-sbarnin suser-jogley suser-ollakka labplot funktronics kernel-of-the-day wine suse-people suse-projects kde3-stable kde-unstable security-prpm security
Now run "apt update; apt install gtk2-devel --no-checksig" as root. That should download about 200MB of RPMs and install them.
Afterwards, your SuSE should have all packages at the necessary versions to compile and run inkscape.
