Is there any way to save Inkscape drawings in SVG tiny format as that is the only kind of SVG support in current releases of Opera and Firefox?
If not, is this something that might be added in the near future.
I would like to migrate away from SWF to SVG for vector web graphics, but I need some browser support.

I don't use Opera, but I think the svgs Inkscape creates work in Firefox. I chose a couple of images from the Open Clipart Library, including one that I did myself, and all of them loaded fine in FF for me. Most of the OCAL images are done in Inkscape, I believe, and I know mine was.
Were you just looking for support, or did you have a test image that didn't work?

Two of the things missing in Inkscape at the moment are SVG Fonts and also animation. However, Firefox is also currently missing these, so they probably wouldn't be blockers for you.
There is an intent to tweak the UI to allow for different "target profiles", to facilitate authoring to specific subsets or platforms. First on the list to target would be SVG Tiny. So whenever it is that time permits, Tiny will be at the top of that list.
Also... there's been a lot of interest in getting at least some Animation going soon, and SVG Tiny's animation is what would probably done first.
I would like to migrate away from SWF to SVG for vector web graphics, but I need some browser support.
Hang out and lend a hand. Even if you can't code, just helping us get details of where Inkscape isn't yet filling your needs would be a major contribution. I'm probably most interested in the UI targeting stuff, so getting into the Jabber chat room some evening PST would be good.
I use Inkscape on Mac OS X although I have used it on Linux as well. I have a Linux computer for if my Mac goes down and also to see where Linux is at. I am eventually going to switch over to entirely open source software for all my needs - mostly design oriented.
One of the big things I look for in programs is export file formats that are open and Internet standards. I use PNG, SWF, and PDF for graphics. I have to make sure things work in all major browsers including Internet Explorer (other ones would be Firefox, Opera, and Safari/Konqueror). I also like to put things in multiple formats for those who are unwilling to download plugins. I also want the PDFs and SWF to work in other viewers other than the Adobe viewers like Preview and Kghostview. I also try to work at least one major version behind and need it to work on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
Another thing I look for is the ability to draw freehand the outline and then choose a fill. One of the things Inkscape can't do as far as I could get it to do is the ability to use the Calligraphy tool and be able to join the outline together and be able to have a fill on it. I haven't figured out how to do Bezier curves so any of those capabilities are beyond my ability. I would like to learn more about node editing - that could be useful. I recently used the star tool to do some Islamic geometric designs and it was very capable. I also often apply Photoshop Elements filters on the design after I use Inkscape or another vector drawing program, so it would be nice if Inkscape could simulate watercolor and oil painting natural media and still be able to export all of the effects into a completely vector format like vector PDF or vector SWF or the SVG if it works in Firefox and Opera.
Here are some examples of some of my most recent work

Yes, that works but it doesn't look as stylish. I do use the line tool, but if I could join up the lines to form a shape and fill it but still have the outline look like a paint stroke, then I wouldn't have to use Photoshop Elements filters. Remember my goal is to use entirely open source software. Jon was asking how I used the product and I was explaining. This may sound unusual or hard to do but Expression was able to do that - the one that Microsoft bought out and I think the current version of Illustrator can do this too. This is one of the major trends in vector drawing programs - to make the illustration with natural media style while still maintaining the vectors.

Like a calligraphy-pen stroke outline, you mean?
Yes, its like the calligraphy stroke although it would be neat to have watercolor as well as a paint stroke, but it would be very much like the calligraphy pen, but you would be able to make it into a shape. I have some examples of the finished product.

I usually do it manually, of course it would be handy to have a shortcut, but is not terribly difficult this way:
http://nicubunu.ro/pictures/inkscape/fill_caligraphy.png
Draw the shape (outline) with the calligraphy tool. Duplicate and fill with the desired color. Delete some nodes to eliminate the interior "hole". Move the "fill" shape below the outline.
Here are some images where this method was used heavily: http://cartoon.nicubunu.ro/pinup/
Thanks for the tip. I'll have to try it out. Also I noticed that the calligraphy tool shape can be modified beyond the default look. Excellent drawings - you are a very good artist.

I went to gristle.org or myjabber.net in Firefox and can't figure out how to register. I am using Adium on Mac OS X.

In general, there's a "register a new account" option to use when you first connect to the server. That will create the account on the server using the name and password you supply.
Create the user account @gristle.org. Then join the room inkscape@...1728... Note that the chat room is at a different server.
Got it - told one of the developers in the Inkscape Jabber room. The only UI improvement I can think of is to do layers like in Gimp. Inkscape is very well designed as far as I can tell.

I think we actually covered things earlier in there that touched on what you wanted. In pure description of problems it sounds like RFE 1123138 "New tool: Vector Bucket Fill", however the details of that makes it clear that it's a more generic solution.
Adding something specifically to do a single path that's been done with the calligraphy tool seems like a reasonable thing. However, we'd probably want to think carefully about the UI on it so that we don't get a tool that ends up being misused and gets in the way of people.
Remember I am just a hobbyist and may use the program more unusually than other people. Stick to what the professional designers want and I will likely be happy too. Any additions in this area would be greatly appreciated but I don't want the team to change the whole focus of the program on my account. Do what you think is best - I don't know how hard it is to program different types of things. I differ to your judgment. The calligraphy tool is a great idea, but as the program is now I can already do a wide variety of different things and it is very useful.
Although I find myself working with Toon Boom Studio Express very often to draw in even though I rarely do animation - the drawing tools just seem so much more free flowing - I am not sure how you would implement that though. I just made use of the star tool in Inkscape the other day and that was extremely useful. Just thought of something else missing in Inkscape that a lot of other vector programs - a variety of different ready made shapes.
Part of how I design is based on the software I have available in my price range and my skill level. If you implement an unusual feature I might use it even though I wouldn't think of it as a requirement as I want to exploit the technology available to their fullest extent - so there is not just one feature I am looking for or one way of doing things that I must have but just that the whole program offers enough of a standard feature set so that I can do basic freeform drawing and beyond that I look more for unusual features that I can expand my repertoire by using.
