I'm trying to make a little logo/startup screen/wallpaper. I've attached an example which should make it clear what I'm trying to do. I need to make the swirl disappear behind Tux. What I'm thinking (coming from raster editing) is to crop the swirl at the points where it and Tux meet. I can't find a way to do this. I've tried editing the nodes, but moving one node changes the whole shape of the swirl.
Is there any way to divide an object into two parts with a line? Is there a way to do what I'm thinking? Any ideas at all?
Thanks.

A few ideas -
Is the tux a separate object? Just put the red-swirl behind it
Or use the tax to 'Cut' the red swirl.
You can divide an object with a line easily using the 'Cut' method. Just draw a freehand line (or other) across your object and do [Path(?)]->[Cut]

I am not entirely sure what you mean but you can use a viewbox for the equivalent of cropping (although masking would be a more accurate description) but you would probably need to do a lot of manual editing of the SVG to achieve it. Using Inkscape as it is now the easiest approach would probably be to turn the swirl into a pattern and put that into whatever object or path you want.

If I understand you correctly the boolean operations should be able to give you the cutting away you want if you play around with them.

Thanks for your replies. I made a little progress with the boolean operations, but not to my satisfaction yet. So I went ahead and use the GIMP and a few layers to achieve the desired effect. The finished wallpaper is up here:

I'll keep fiddling with Inkscape. :)
Thanks.
