Inkscape gets a mention, a quick paragraph http://software.newsforge.com/software/05/08/17/2041231.shtml?tid=152&ti...
Not sure why exactly their is an expectation that Inkscape would include HTML export.

Did you ever do mockups of web-sites? :)

I have briefly read tutorial about using vector graphics programs to create graphics for web page designs. I also recall an inkscape user doing a write up of how they created their graphics in Inkscape and then later sliced them in another program and then turned it into a web page.
Is this a very common use case?
I dont recall Adobe Illustrator making a big deal about their HTML export but perhaps Macromedia Freehand had additional functionality I overlooked as I have found the Macromedia products particularly good at providing a clear workflow for various tasks.
Is is something the Inkscape developers should really be taking a closer look at? Inkscape is very much a general purpose drawing tool at the moment but it would certainly be interesting if someone found a target market and made inkscape really great a doing a particular task.
The closest I could find to relevant bug reports (and I hate anonymous bug reports by the way) were these requests Export Web Image Map http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=93438&atid=604309&func=deta... but it is extremely vague. I'm temptd to just close it and require a named person claim and explain it if they want it kept open. This request gets more to the point about slicing the image http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=93438&atid=604309&func=deta...
Given that Adobe provides Image Ready, an almost entirely seperate application purely for the purpose of slicing this is quite an ambitious feature to try and cram into Inkscape. If I recall correctly there was someone developing a suitable plugin and perhaps it will gradually evolve into a more general purpose slicing application including the HTML export you seem to be interesting in (if I'm understanding this whole issue correctly).
Sincerely

We even have extensions for slicing by guides

Yes, IIRC Artemio (http://artemiolabs.com) creates all of his sites in Inkscape. Btw, does anyone know why his examples were moved away from Showcase page at www.inkscape.org?

Well, the fact is that many (half of?) designers prefer vectors over bitmaps at drawing stage. This way of doing web-design still requires graphics optimization stage, which probably should be done outside of Inkscape anyway (mogrify from ImageMagick would do the trick), while bitmap people are usually happy with their GIMP/Photoshop in this case
The other fact is that Inkscape is the sRGB-only beast based on W3C standards - web standards, so improving it for web-oriented design would be pretty natural.
And finally, I see not many use cases for exporting selection other than in sake of exporting a bitmap that should fit a cell in a <table/> ;) We have discussed it ca. half a year ago in a thread about redesign of "Export bitmap" dialog.

Ouch. Could someone with appropriate privilegies move them to Showcase?

Good idea, I've done this reorganization on the site.
Hmm, there seems to be a little conceptual overlap between Screenshots, Gallery, and Showcase, but perhps some thought will be given to such overlaps during the website redesign.

Rather than moving it and breaking links I would recommend copying and putting a link to the new location at the top of the old page.

I use Inkscape dearly for website graphics and mock-ups, but I always slice the image up myself and code it by hand. I don't trust programs with my source-code!
