Re: [Inkscape-user] Printing 8.5" x 22"
Hi all,
I do not use Inkscape to print, but Adobe Acrobat (since you do not want tiling, the Reader version should be fine). The steps that I follow are (roughly): 1) Download the latest Windows version (inkscape-LATEST.zip); 2) Run it, select/make the appropriate page size, draw; 3) Save as "PDF" and save as "Cairo PDF" and compare both PDFs (in particular if you have transparencies); 4) If I am using a "fancy" page-size that I created. I make sure I have that page size available in Windows. In case you must create one the steps are: Go to "Start\Printers and Faxes" Go to "File\Server Properties" Under the "Forms" tab I create the appropriate form (i.e. page size) and save it with a nice name. 5) Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat and print it. But note that: - You must check under the document properties (Ctrl+D) that the page size is correct. - Remember to select the appropriate paper size for the pirnter (inside "File\Print..." then "Properties" and in "Advanced..."); - Selecting Adobe to rescale or not should not provide different results, but these can happen. So it is worth testing.
I am able to print huge and/or custom works this way without problems in many different printers.
Wild wild guess: if everything else fails, try printing an exported bitmap with a resolution of 600 dpi or less. _________________________________________________________________ Search from any Web page with powerful protection. Get the FREE Windows Live Toolbar Today! http://www.toolbar.live.com
Thank you, Davi, for your response to this question. As time allows, I will try out your suggestions and report on my findings.
I've been checking out some of the commercial page lay-out & publishing apps available. For the classroom, Print Master (I have an old version,12) has a very easy to use and print banner component. It sets the banner length as you type so, you start out with one page and as you type the banner lengthens. This is very cool but is rather limited in the document design area. I'm thinking about checking out some of the Serif products. There support staff assures me that there are no problems printing banners to different lengths. And, the applications offer my students powerful (as far as I can tell)design components so that they can draw, etc. as much as they want. I include these thoughts in the hopes that Inkscape incorporates some or all of these features.
Again, thank you for your help in this.

Please, I need further information:
In step 3, I don't see a save as "Cairo PDF" only PDF. Where is Cairo? How do you compare the two?
In File/Server Properties tab, I created the banner size I'm attempting to create. When I try to print, that "fancy" sized paper does not come up as a selection in the printer set-up box (should I be able to select that one particular paper size? Only the paper sizes from HP are available. How do I select that one size paper?)
Step 5: I believe I checked the document properties that the page size was correct but only 11 inches of the document showed in the Acrobat Reader box.
I am so incouraged by your last line, "I am able to print huge/or custom ....." Very cool.
Thank you sooooo much for your help.

Hello Jon,
I don't believe there are any problems at all printing from inkscape indirectly via the Gimp (as I do) or via pdf (as Davi does) to any custom page size, so it's a little difficult for me to understand what you want changed in Inkscape as it prints banners very well albeit indirectly via gimp/pdf: i'm afraid i am missing the point somewhere as to what you want. apologies.

Oh dear..... I must be doing something very wrong, I tried every method mentioned and the results are the same, I can get a print-out of either 11 or 14 inches then the printing stops as though the print job was completed. I just can't get passed the 11 or 14 inch thing.
Even using Acrobat Reader, on the Reader print set-up screen, the whole document is shown up to 11 or 14 inches. The print out is then exactly what is shown on that screen. A couple of times I did get the whole 24 inches of the document on the printer set-up page but only 11 or 14 inches was active, the rest of the 13 or 10 inches (of the document) was darkened out indicating that it would not print (it didn't).
It has to be something simple, I can get banner print-outs using other applications.
I'm using the latest version of all applications.
Thank you so much for your help and patience.

Lets see...
Ragtime 5 Solo will print the entire document although the off-set between the pages is off. I have to print the entire document, tear the pages apart on the perforated lines (of the continuous feed paper), realign the pages together and tape it all together.
Print Master 12 (its a few years old now, I think there is a v16 or something like that). This app actually works great for me in terms of the banner and does a great job of printing it. You start off with a one page banner and as you add text, etc. the app adds pages. I'm not sure how long it can go, it easily goes the 3 or 4 page banners I need. (This would be SO COOL in Inkscape!!!). This app it too limited in terms of the design of the banners, thus Inkscape for the more involved things.
The Serif programs (Page Plus & Draw Plus) are supposed to easily handle banners of custom lengths with no problems with printing. I'm really thinking about Page Plus (I haven't purchased it yet). I use Draw Plus 7 for geometry drawings, etc. They export easily and Word Perfect has no difficulty opening, printing, etc. the documents that include the drawings.
I downloaded Scribus but I haven't had much time to try it yet. I'm not sure how it does.
On another note, is there a way to use something like a panorama app (Hugin?)to "put together" many pages of a document like photos? Multi-paging?
Thank you so much for your help!!

Hi Jon,
how about just exporting a .png from inkscape and importing it into Print Master?

Hi Everyone... and the mystery continues. I am very encouraged that many of you are able to print custom sized documents. I am using an HP Deskjet 5650 printer. Do you think there might be a problem with that choice? I do have the latest driver installed.
Thank you for your patience with this problem that I am encountering!!
I do not use Inkscape to print, but Adobe Acrobat (since you do not want tiling, the Reader version should be fine). The steps that I follow are (roughly):
- Download the latest Windows version (inkscape-LATEST.zip);

I did the above steps. The only difference was saving as "Cairo PDF" since I couldn't seem to find it.
- If I am using a "fancy" page-size that I created. I make sure I have
that page size available in Windows. In case you must create one the steps are: Go to "Start\Printers and Faxes" Go to "File\Server Properties" Under the "Forms" tab I create the appropriate form (i.e. page size) and save it with a nice name.
I did the above steps. I created a 8.5 x 24 inch form and saved it.
- Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat and print it. But note that:
- You must check under the document properties (Ctrl+D) that the page
size is correct.
I opened the document in Adobe Reader 7 (I used the latest version). I checked the document properties and the page size is correct. The entire custom document size is correct.
- Remember to select the appropriate paper size for the pirnter (inside
"File\Print..." then "Properties" and in "Advanced...");
I set this to banner paper since that is the only setting I can find in the HP printer set-up box. I set it to landscape. The paper size that I set in step 4 does not show up as a paper choice. Should it?
When I click on print, the Print box opens. The Preview shows only 8.5 x 11 inches, NOT the entire 24 inches. If I click on "Choose Paper Source by PDF paper size", I get a 14 inch preview. 14 inches is the max. I have ever gotten. (HP assured me that the printer can print out longer then 14 in. documents).
Print range is ALL. With ALL selected, the first 11 inches of the document is highlighted (see above paragraph). If I click on any other selection (Current view or Pages), only the middle 11 inch section of the document is highlighted. Both ends are darkened.
When Page Scaling is set to NONE, the preview shows the entire document BUT only 11 inches in length are highlighted. The remaining 13 inches are darkened out. It is this darkened section that does not print. If I could only get that remaining 13 inches highlighted, I guess the entire thing will print (right assumption?).
- Selecting Adobe to rescale or not should not provide different
results, but these can happen. So it is worth testing.
I am able to print huge and/or custom works this way without problems in many different printers.
Can't wait until I can say the same thing!!!
Wild wild guess: if everything else fails, try printing an exported bitmap with a resolution of 600 dpi or less.
Going to try this next.....
Thank you EVERYONE!!!
