Hey All,
I think the Inkscapers group on DeviantArt (http://inkscapers.deviantart.com/) is underused. Scislac made me a moderator some time ago, but the configuration of the group gives little opportunity to develop the group--not that I know much about DA groups yet.
I would like to help build up the popularity of the group if I could have my access elevated to explore its setup. I'm hoping Scislac is reading this mailing list or that someone can pass on my request.
Cheers microUgly
Will do in just a few minutes.
Cheers, Josh

Thanks, Josh. I don't want to interfere with any intentions you had with the group, but it's been pretty static and I would enjoy trying to make it more active.

Done. You now have more appropriate privileges for someone with the title of Moderator. :)

BTW, the deviantArt guys themselves are working on various improvements and such to things we may care about. Some was mentioned at the Libre Graphics Meeting. I think Josh is the best guy to include as the main communication conduit (aka cc him on mails and such), but hopefully soon we will be able to gain more from DA groups.
The general sentiment they expressed on this was that they realize that they can help their users by improving the area and making the service itself support some things that individual groups were doing in ad-hoc ways on their own. So it seems like a good time to bring a bit more thought and focus (as you have) to the DA group.
Thanks for the additional privileges, Josh. And thanks for the heads up about future changes, Jon.
The first thing I've done is added additional folders to the "Gallery": - Featured - Technical - Caricatures - People & Portraits - Scenes - Logos & clipart
The folders are not meant to reflect a theme, rather the variety of usages for Inkscape. I would like to do the same with favourites also.
In terms of "DA Groups", galleries and favourites appear functionally identical. I would like to task the "Gallery" as a collection of high-quality work--stand out examples of what can be achieved with Inkscape. The "favourites" would be a collection of all Inkscape work submitted to the group.

I've been on dA for a little while now, and regularly submit my Inkscape-drawn comics to several groups. Despite having joined the Inkscapers group some time ago, I've never submitted to it as it always gave the impression of being a showcase of works that were by invitation only.
If it's to be opened up for anyone to submit to, a clear message (and some rules) on the main page would be a good first step.
I would also increase the number of folders a little further, or broaden their names a little. My first though was where my webcomic would go: it's not a caricature. It's potentially a "Scene", but will that result in it being muddled up with landscapes or still life? "People n Portraits"? Possibly, but that doesn't really fit either.
And how much of a piece has to be Inkscape-created for it to qualify? A little final touching up in The GIMP is probably okay, but where do you draw the line? Is it a showcase of what can be done in Inkscape alone, or what can be done with Inkscape as part of a larger workflow? And if it's the latter, should it be a requirement for artists to mention their other tools, so as not to mislead people as to what Inkscape is capable of?
Opening up this group is a great idea, but it's probably worth taking a look at some other similar groups first to see what they do.

Hey Mark,
Sorry, for the delayed reply.
I will post some general usage for the group that suggests how the group is intended to be used and administered. But at the moment I'm still getting a feel for it and don't want to make any official statements.
I'm very interested in opinions for how the art can be grouped. I'll create a post on the group to get the opinion of the community. Please voice your opinion about comic strips can be included.
Cheers

...oh, and in regards to,
And how much of a piece has to be Inkscape-created for it to qualify?
I personally don't feel it has to be 100%. As long as it's usage is not insignificant it will be accepted into favourites. But because the Gallery is for exceptional Inkscape work, ideally it would need to be predominately Inkscape. It's subjective.

I've posted my thoughts about groups/folders to dA, as requested.

That seems reasonable, and in-line with what I was thinking.
Although I haven't said as much on dA, perhaps a "Mixed Workflow" folder might be a good addition, for works which include a significant amount of Inkscape work, but also a significant amount of work from other applications. The heavily GIMPed pieces, or the Synfig animations which use Inkscape as a starting point. I think it would be good to showcase some of these works, to show Inkscape as part of a wider ecosystem of applications, but separating them out from the 90% Inkscape works would help to avoid any confusion as to Inkscape's own capabilities.
Cheers,
Mark
