Hi list,
I was testing the trace bitmap and got really impressed. Of course it isn't a Corel Trace, but is the beginning.
My congratulations to the dev team.
Here is a simple test I did: http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=157359067&size=o
The first is a gif (and quite small) image. The second is svg. ;-)
Sincerely ...

In what ways is it not a Corel Trace - can you please elaborate?
I know it makes a trace of complex images like an Romero Britto drawings. Is not perfect but with just one click a drawing could convert to many vector layers colored in the correct color.
I didn't see it on Inkscape. Maybe i don't know how to use it correctly.

Inkscape can do this too. In the trace dialog, select Multiple scanning, Color, and set the desired number of colors in Scans. For best results, click Stack. This produces very nice color scans of photos and complex art.
An example I was talking about:

Have a look at http://inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.41-CVS-rose.png
And for real coolness at http://inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.42-CVS-trace-color.png or http://inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.42-CVS-trace-objects.png
Really. My problem now is to know how to set the parameters.
Best regards Ezequias

set # of scans to sth above 30, set 'color' as trace method, and you're fine won't hurt to play around, it's fun anyway! :)

another thing about tracing: autotrace also produces interesting results, i'd love to is included in inkscape somewhere soon
I've done created some vector drawings from photos with Autotrace. The files sizes are often quite big, but if you open the SVG and then save through Inkscape, then the size shrinks exponentially.
The following are some samples: http://benjamin-newton.info/downloads/photo-zoom
