I see this error message when I try to open .AI files
Extension "AI 8.0 Output" failed to load because a dependency was not met. Dependency: type: executable location: path string: gs
what does this mean?

This means you don't have Ghostscript installed.
Anyway, with devel version it is recommended to use a newer AI format (version 9 or later) and the AI [PDF-based] file type in the Open dialog.

When you open the file, or when Inkscape starts up? Where do you see this message? What OS?
