Forgive me when I miss the obvious but...
I have a shape with all those points along it's path. Let's assume it looks like a "T". Now I want join the two corner points so I end up with two shapes/objects. One looking like "-" and the other one like "|". _ T -> |
How can I do that?

In node tool, select the node(s) where you want your object to be separated and click "Break path..." or "Split path..." on the Tool Controls bar. Then go to Path -> Break Apart (Shift-Ctrl-K) to separate into two objects.
