Inkscape on Windows 7 pro 64 bit - very slow, unusable.
Hello, I am posting on behalf of a friend who is stuck on Win7 pro (64 bit I think). He installed the latest Inkscape (as of about Jan 2011) and he cannot use it at all. His laptop is pretty powerful with min 2gigs of RAM; hell, it makes my desktop look like a block of wood!
It's very slow to draw, to drag around or zoom. There are no advanced filters, or anything complex, being used - even a blank file with a single line in it cannot be edited.
I am asking if there are any windows "tips" for using Inkscape? Is there some kind of "XP mode" or some advice re 64bit/32bit or maybe some graphic driver tips? Perhaps there are known clashes with other fancy windows software - like a colour enhancer (he has some kind of thing that makes his colours brighter on his laptop).
Anyone have a clue what I could suggest to him?
Thanks, \d
Well 2gb isnt that, much and it is likely that he/she has a bad(probably integrated) graphics card in their laptop.

I have a win7 64 notebook with 4GB ram, i5 processor and a 1.5 non-integrated video card. I see odd performance issues. For example a duplicate operation pauses for a good second maybe two. I don't see this for the same svg file on my older XP notebook.
I still haven't found the source of the problem but I'm guessing it is windows 7 64 itself.

I was afraid it might be.
(His video card and stuff is all top-notch (he plays games a lot) so I doubt that's the issue.)
Is there some kind of XP mode that he can try run Inkscape under? If all else fails, I will get him to install Ubuntu in a VM to use Inkscape!

There is a XP compatibility mode in Windows 7. But I doubt this is the trouble.
2 Gbyte is a miserable amount of memory for a 64 bit install. Many desktops for Windows 7 64 bit have 8 Gbyte!
(Using 64 bit often doubles the memory needed).

Damn! Thanks for the info. I didn't know this.

Turns out the win7 in question is 32 bit. I have not heard back from my friend. I will post here should he find a solution. He is going to try running Inkscape in an XP virtual box as well as turning off Win7's fancy interface effects.
Thanks for the feedback so far.
