hello,
It's been a good long while since I've emailed the mailing list I am a part of the server management involving inkscape and have been for approximately 4+ years. I am writing you today for 2 reasons.
1. Our current site is terrible, I'm sorry but there is no chance of just brushing over it. I know there have been a fair number of people in the past 2 years who have submitted website mockup ideas and we've had contests but no one has ever followed through. Which I'll take partial blame for it. Things are just scattered every which way 2. I wanted to update you on the status of the Test suite, Osuosl is currently in the process of setting up the ability to run test suites so that we can test the SVG building more efficiently. So stay tuned for more info on this in the near future.
Anyway back to problem 1. Here's how I think we can best solve this problem. We're going to break the website into different categories and duties.
1. UI (mockups) (*ARTIST*/PROGRAMMERS*) - Ability to make mockups of how you think the website should look. - After we pick yours we will request to see the top couple in HTML/CSS 2. Artwork for the website (*ARTIST*) - Ability to develop / sharpen logos as well as various buttons etc as needed 3. Drupal Modules (*PROGRAMMERS*) - Skills required - Knowledge of Mysql/PHP/JS and HTML - Knowledge or ability to learn how drupal works 4. Documentation (*WRITERS*) - Skills - Moderate knowledge and ability to update and port existing content over to the new site. 5. Translation
- We need people who specialize in various languages to port content once completed into the various languages.
So what's wrong with the current design? a lot, it's way too cluttered and disorganized not to mention you click wiki you go to a whole different navigation and sub site. That is just a pain to deal with as a user. So if you have skills in 1 of the above 5 categories, please contact me or the list directly and we'll assemble the a team and get this going! let me know what you think.... Thanks, Ian "Inc" C.
P.S we've also started on a site map located here http://www.mindmeister.com/70256281/inkscape-web-site-frontpage Pw is: vectorfun
Hi Ian, others,
As a vivid user of Inkscape I'm very happy to help. I'm an Ux designer by trade and can mainly help on the UI side of the list. I'll work on a mockup, but also am happy to help implementing someone else's mockup - if it is good ;). A few questions: You said that there were website mockups being submitted in the past, are they online somewhere? You also mention Drupal, which I gather means that the site is currently in Drupal. Is the idea to keep it in Drupal and get a new look 'n feel or is it possible to change *) the CMS if it fits better in the new look 'n feel? And finally the mean question: why do you think it will work this time or what was stopping previous attempts?
regards, Steven
*) Not that I want to switch from Drupal, just checking options.

Sure Steven, we'd love to have you on board. Our previous web design contest was at http://inkscapers.deviantart.com/blog/17274523/ unfortunately it never came to light... I'm going to go out on a limb from our previous design and say I've picked two of my favorites from the contest. Here's a mockup of the main site ( http://duckgoesoink.deviantart.com/art/Inkscape-Website-entry-front-81779014 ) here's a demo of another page on the site ( http://duckgoesoink.deviantart.com/art/Inkscape-Website-entry-main-81779682 ) also I halfway like the side navigation and the top of this theme... http://gri3fon.deviantart.com/art/Inkscape-redesign-entry-80320927 of course some technologies have changed and I'm sure each designer can make an even better mockup, So whatever you'd like to do! Well, there's no guarantee that it will work this time, but under unified command and and people volunteering and each person having a roll I think it'll work out great! Also we're talking on the dev forum, we may bypass Drupal completely and end up doing an actual site in Django which would allow us a lot more flexibility design wise! let me know if you all have any other questions and thanks Andreas I'm sure we can use you too... Thanks, Ian On Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 11:40 AM, Steven Ottens <steven@...2586...> wrote:

I note that whatever the other problems of the site the Google page rank of the first page is excellent, 8 on a scale of 10. So whatever was done to gain that page rank is worth retaining.
Hello Sir,
I would like to help out on the programming side whether Drupal or Django.

Ian, I can help with some documentation and translation things, and I am also equipped to contribute with regard to art and drawing. I cannot do programming, although this is terribly interesting to me.
As to writing (documentation): I am a Sr Member of the Society for Technical Communication.
As to the translation: I know Chinese, German and Spanish. I usually just do translation FROM one of these languages INTO English, because English is my native language. But I can also do some pre-translation things with regard to copy that the project would need translations INTO Chinese, German, and Spanish for. I'd be happy to work with native speakers who would finish the pretranslated things.

Thank you for your help! I appreciate it, I will be in contact with both of you in the future. In the Mean Time please check out our documentation and if you'd like to edit go ahead and shoot me an email with your google account and I will add access for you. I think let's go ahead and started with Phase 1, To me it looks like we're going to have to break this into groups once we get phase 1 knocked out. I have a document spelling out a portion of this. located here https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1K2O-gRdbkP0XATykk6LcPo6O5-JdQzK4QmP... If you have a google account feel free to contact me in IRC via PM (nick: Inc) or email me here your google account so you're able to edit this document. I also created a room in order to allow for a place to talk about development located on IRC on the network: irc.freenode.net in #inkscape-web . What I've got from this is Django is our best bet. thanks, Ian On Sat, Nov 27, 2010 at 10:09 AM, Technical Writing Plus < doc-x@...99...> wrote:
