Thanks for your reply. I tried the path effects "bend" but it distorted the letters too much. I did try the split text function after sizing it the way I wanted it, then placed individual letters on the path where I wanted them. This worked, but was painfully tedious. So I guess the short answer is that there is no "straightforward" way to do what I want. Oh well.

What you might be seeing are the transforms ("changing it with the control arrows") being replaced by the transforms that occur when using text-on-path.The easy answer is to find a font you like on Google Fonts or DaFont.com, then use that font on the path.The more complicated answer is to try converting your current text to a path object (after manipulating its height width), then using menu: Path>Path Effects>Bend to get the text to conform to a path. It won't be the same, but depending on the path, it may look ok.
