2020-12-04 11-16-57 PST Mc January of which year ? 2020-12-04 11-25-11 PST Mc I think I can come to vectors to discuss the contest planned timeframe before 2021 2020-04-25 14-36-23 PDT Mc sure :D 2020-12-04 11-27-46 PST Mc TBF if he continues to act against what I consider the good health of the project that'll become what I want 2020-12-04 11-24-46 PST Mc no, rocketchat planned install date ^^ 2020-09-10 12-17-52 PDT Mc :/ 2020-10-27 10-16-15 PDT Mc yeah, I sent him an email quite recently and I had an answer after some time : he changed jobs, changed city, and lose a family member all at once, and is trying to find his new routine 2020-04-25 14-42-23 PDT Mc yeah I should be more relaxed next week (I hope!) 2020-12-04 11-30-32 PST Mc maybe 2020-12-04 11-29-42 PST Mc :/ 2020-12-04 11-25-40 PST Mc I ranted to doctormo only but I'm quite mad at how people run things 2019-10-12 07-11-36 PDT Mc I have a dilemma : I'd like us to take part in google code-in ( https://codein.withgoogle.com/ [high-school level program organized as a contest where we setup a large number of "tasks" ~2h each of various difficulty that students tackle. Could be code, doc, outreach, etc.]) because basically I've heard that it induces a boost in participation and attracts young long-term contributors to participating projects; however it is a *significant* investment : basically around 100hours/week on mentors (shared, not 100h each) during 8 or 9 weeks. The comments from #gsoc when I asked for advice were those :
23:02 < Mc> I'm unsure we (Inkscape) have enough man/womanpower to participate efficiently in google code-in... Do you have a rule of thumb on the number of mentors and of diversity of tasks that would be "nice to have" to try to participate efficiently ? 23:17 < terri> Mc: A few of us were saying elsewhere that we'd want about 20 mentors and 100 tasks prepared in advance, but it depends on how much time your mentors have to dedicate. 23:17 < Mc> ok, 20 mentors is impossible, that clarifies it :p 23:18 < Mc> (100 tasks is clearly doable though) 23:18 < terri> I know people who do it with 3, but at least one of them has no other job for those 3 weeks. :) 23:19 < Mc> Dec2-Jan21 ? 23:20 < terri> *shrug* or whatever it was the year in question. no clue what they're doing this year. :) 23:20 < Mc> I mean, this year it looks like much more than three weeks 23:21 < terri> yeah, that's why I'd want 20 people if I were running it for my org. it's easy to burn out, and lots of folk travel/have family commitments/etc. in that time frame. 23:21 < Mc> (8 weeks ?) 23:21 < fundamental> It's impressive that there are enough open source projects which can deadicate that level of resources 23:21 < terri> maybe I'm just mis-remembering how many weeks it was, though. 23:25 < terri> Mc: That said, that's *my* rule of thumb for a pretty wide umbrella, where we'd need different people for differnet parts of the project. If you've got a smaller subset but they're able to handle more tasks and are more available in that time... well, as I said, it *can* be done with 3 if you're willing to commit to a very high level of activity! 23:26 < terri> It might be better to try to guesstimate how many hours people can put in rather than how many people. 23:27 < terri> 20 people x 5 hours/week versus 10 putting in 10 hours each, or some mix of both. 23:28 < Mc> Ah yeah I can probably commit 3 hours a day most days 23:34 < Mc> 100h/wk would be your rough time estimate (after the first week(s), I guess) ? 23:35 < terri> yeah, something like that. you want "someone's going to be able to evaluate any student's task within a couple of hours" coverage 23:36 < terri> Since it's a contest, students get super nervous if they have to wait too long for task evals, and they can't accept a new task until their existing one is okayed. 23:38 -!- mode/#gsoc [+o meflin] by ChanServ Day changed to 12 oct. 2019 08:56 < PulkoMandy> hi Mc, I think the 20 people and about 100 tasks estimate is correct. However, remember that a part of this can be non-technical (both the tasks and the people). In our case at Haiku we have maybe 3 or 4 core devs mentoring in GCI, and most of our mentors are users or former GCI contestants who are not otherwise involved with the project, they do the 1st level support to the student and know when a particular task needs a more technical 08:56 < PulkoMandy> person to review it. So basically you may need to be a bit creative with how you find mentors for this
I think if we include vectors and usual community members we can get to the right number of involved people ( Me, Jabier, Tav, doctormo, ede123, nathan, RdH, NPJ2000, Thomas Holder, CRogers, Maren, Tim, Michele, Mihaela, Ryan, Tedg, Lazur, Brynn, maybe Scislac and bryce ) to not burnout anyone (but me :P) and get a decent number of tasks across the areas of the program (code; documentation/training; outreach;QA;Design) but the bad thing is the timing : 8 weeks in Dec+Jan is basically when we wanted to focus on pre+post-release stuff so it's very badly timed for us (and it's yearly so if we want to try, it would be in a year); what do you think ? 2020-09-10 12-17-58 PDT Mc Hope he'll be alright 2019-10-05 10-50-42 PDT Mc OCAL: https://marc.jeanmougin.fr/share/all2.tgz 2020-04-25 14-40-41 PDT Mc ^^ 2020-10-27 10-17-10 PDT Mc he plans to come back "pretty soon" 2020-09-10 04-03-18 PDT Moini Just in case someone asks about Bryce, I think he's got other things on his mind currently than Inkscape, he's worried the wildfires will come nearer and he'll need to evacuate. 2020-12-04 11-32-00 PST Moini causally. 2020-12-04 11-27-33 PST Moini I don't want him to step back, but to responsibly deal with limited time availability. 2020-12-04 11-24-29 PST Moini About screen contest start? 2020-09-10 04-03-52 PDT Moini The arrow tip is where he lives. 2020-10-27 10-16-41 PDT Moini Merci! 2020-04-25 14-42-47 PDT Moini (for me, too) 2020-12-04 11-25-33 PST Moini Yeah. Bryce is afraid that people want to take responsibility from him. 2020-12-04 11-31-53 PST Moini I know he does, I just don't know if they are related :) 2020-10-27 11-10-05 PDT Moini Sorry for the pling :) Hoping things will settle down for Patrick quickly, as much as that is possible. 2020-09-10 04-06-17 PDT Moini Currently he's outside all warning zones. 2020-10-26 06-56-57 PDT Moini (ha, I just checked his profile on inkscape.org - Martin's spyware tells me Patrick has visited the website yesterday) 2020-12-04 11-28-21 PST Moini I can understand that view. 2020-12-04 11-27-42 PST Moini Which can mean to delegate. 2020-10-26 06-54-59 PDT Moini Hi Marc, do you know anything about why Patrick isn't here anymore? I thought he'd just be on vacation, but this is so long already... 2019-10-12 17-01-31 PDT Moini Mmmh. I have serious doubts we'd be able to do that with that set of contributors only. Better ask someone else, too, they might be more optimistic :)
You, Jabier and Patrick will be quite busy with the release fixes. NPJ2000 is nice, but I'm not sure he's able to be of much help as a mentor... , Chris is chronically unavailable, just like Mihaela and Ryan (basically, they only come to the meetings and only occasionally are able to do what they signed up for), Michèle has a new job (same employer), but might be more available soon, maybe. Tim is already doing quite a lot, and often is unavailable unexpectedly, because of various family (health) issues. I don't trust myself to have the patience and time it takes, release stuff is enough for me. Brynn wants to reduce the things she does (e.g. she's going to stop moderating forums/galleries, closing her forum, and generally wants to do less). Bryce is kind of ... gone.
Ted, Josh, Nathan, Martin, Lazur and Thomas, maybe ecke, too, might be the best candidates who could be able to invest some time.
Btw. where does the number 100 for the number of tasks come from? Instructions for organizations are a bit scarce, I couldn't find anything useful.

Seems we don't need to worry after all. 2020-09-10 04-04-32 PDT Moini Wanted to let you know, because I intend to go off-Inkscape-line for a few days (except for reporting bugs, I suppose). Kielux preparations :) 2020-12-04 11-29-22 PST Moini Still hope he'll understand that we don't hate him, just want things to be dealt with. Up to now, I seem to have failed doing that. 2020-04-25 14-42-36 PDT Moini It's something to look forward to ;-) 2020-12-04 11-30-25 PST Moini (that's a guess) 2020-04-25 14-41-52 PDT Moini I was thinking of after 1.0, when things relax for you a bit. 2020-04-25 14-40-25 PDT Moini Thanks! I'm getting so many positive replies (that's cool), in the end we may need an extra contributor to turn them into a series :) 2020-12-04 11-25-48 PST Moini I only want him to take on his responsibility... 2020-04-25 14-40-42 PDT Moini So, no hurry for you, the form is online until October. 2019-10-05 12-41-46 PDT Moini Merci beaucoup! Downloading from your link now. 2020-04-25 14-26-29 PDT Moini I know you don't have a lot of time, and you've already given an interview - but maybe if you find some time later, we could have our own interview with you? The form's website is even in French ;-)

I'm not good enough at making it clear to him that that's not what people want. Or at least, I hope that's not what people want.
