Hi guys,
SCALE 13x is coming up on Feb 19th, and Inkscape has a booth again. I was wondering if we might want to get some materials together for that and/or other shows.
A few years back we had a vertical banner for LGM that we used, but it is not holding up any more (I think Andy got it in a print shop in China for under $1) and was not Inkscape specific. If we want to get a new one they seem to be in the $150-$280 range. Smaller banners or signs could come in for less.
We could also do something for giveaway/schwag, such as small stickers or cards from moo.com. Those are $20 for 90 stickers and $20 for 100 mini cards.

http://us.moo.com/products/minicards.html
Minicards could have room for our logo and a QR code to the website.
Do either of these sound like a good idea? We're getting a bit shorter on time so I can understand if we might want to hold off on the banner.

Cute. Wonder how the cost compares with regular business cards?
Stickers are probably more likely to get taken home than printed material.

I'd be interested in if something could be tied in with the hackfest donation. Wouldn't take too many donations for it to pay for itself.
https://inkscape.org/en/support-us/hackfest/
Those minicards might be perfect for handing out to people interested in donating to the hackfest, to give them a URL to our page and a 1-2 sentence pitch about it. It'd only take a maximum of maybe 4 cards resulting in donations for this to pay for itself.

Another random idea... At a Ubuntu conference I attended, the local LUG took a group photo, printed it up as a puzzle, and left it in the commons area for people to work on during the conference.
Imagine doing similarly at a conference, except with the image being the most recent Inkscape About screen. The puzzles run about $30 + shipping:

A further idea is to have a smaller sized puzzle (5x7 or 8x10) there at the booth itself, for passers-by to stop and work on while they chat with you. These run for about $9 and up.

That was a great activity that people really enjoyed. At KDE they did one with their last aKademy photo as well, which had good reviews. I think the about screen would be a good way to celebrate the new release. The only thought I would have is put it to the back of the booth, to make it so that people who want to casually just say hi can actually get through the crowds ;-)

Sounds fun! Great idea.

I think the banner, stickers, and cards all sound like a good idea. Our barren booth at SCALE is kind of an embarrassment... we're a graphics app and we have the stock generic "banner" they provide us with.
Cheers, Josh

Having said that, we should make the banner (quickly) using the existing graphics we have available. Take a look at the ubuntu banners I made a few year ago (cost $110 from VT printing firm):

I'd like to see what design we're going to use, it'd be great to have some materials to bring to LGM and other events too.

I've gotten some more details and pricing.
For a banner, my local FedEx/Kinkos can get them done with about 48 hours notice. That is quite doable, and probably safest for making it in time for the conference.
https://psg.kinkos.com/ngproductProd/deepLinkGateway.html?ppid=1332
The retractable ones look handy, but the "Versatile" looks like it might do well. We can also get that one double-sided (aka a banner for each side). That runs $169.99 plus tax etc, and includes two 24"w x 70"h banners (each can be different).
They can also do a roll of 500 stickers for about $80, but could take 7-10 days.
For give-away stuff I'm leaning towards moo.com with some of the sticker books (postage stamp-sized, $9.99 per 90) and some mini cards ($19.99 per 100) that include info for the hackfest. Moo estimates that 100 minicards plus 180 stickers and 7 business-day shipping would come to a total of $66.72.
So going with those options the cost looks to be around $237 plus tax. How are things looking on this?

As a one-off expense I am OK with this. What designs are you planning to use? Are we going to have a formal vote?

Yes, the main expense is one-off (later we should probably look into long-term plans for low-cost conference give-aways). I wanted to get a rough consensus on this before submitting a formal vote. It does look like we're in good shape to call for one now.
As far as designs go, that's the next step. We'd need two large designs for the banners, then some for the mini cards and stickers. Moo is setup to do a different design on each, but hundreds would be too much. :-)
It looks like the stickers come 6 to a page, so that might be handy as a base. Regardless I was thinking of tossing things out quickly to our user and dev lists.
