Vote: Affinity License for GSoC student
Dear board,
= Background =
My GSoC student is working on .afdesign import and is making very good progress. He’d like to purchase a license for Affinity Designer to continue the work. You probably all got the Adobe news on the weekend, and due to that, there is currently a flash sale. The price in the EU is currently 37€ (50% off). So please vote quickly so we can make use of that.
= Vote = A) Authorize reimbursement of Manpreet Singh for an Affinity Designer 2 / Affinity Suite license, up to $100. B) No reimbursement. C) Other: …
Best regards Jonathan
I'm ok with making a quick decision, nevertheless I would like some clarification first:
- Am I right to assume that acquiring a license for Affinity Designer was not part of the original proposal, because otherwise it would've already been bought/provided before the student began their work? Why is it necessary now? Or was it always the plan to buy it in the middle of the project?
- Option "a" is not aligned with the description. This is about Affinity Designer, not the suite.

Hi René,
Sorry for the confusion. GSoC doesn’t expect that the students incur extra costs, and the stipend is for them to keep. So it wasn’t missing from the GSoC proposal, as it didn’t belong there. It would probably be possible to continue the project without, but much more cumbersome and the results would likely be worse.
For the second point, I should have clarified that. In case only the suite is available in India (I can’t see that here) we would approve of that as well. If both are available, choose the cheaper option.
Best regards Jonathan

Hate giving more money to Adobe, but at least it is half as much :-)

I appreciate the nature of this request but feel like in the future any potential expenditures for a GSoC student should be known to the voting body at the time of application (such as if this is under the purview of a committee with a budget in the future). Approving this retroactively feels like it potentially opens the door to applicants offering to work on something they might not possess the hardware/software/OSes for with future proposals.

Dear board,
I also vote A.
Closing the vote as everyone has voted. I appreciate Josh's comment. I do see a case for a slippery-slope argument. I've added it to the GSOC Application template wiki page (https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/SOC_Application_Template#Tasks) so we at least know beforehand.
