I suppose there's a few salvagable sentences but it's mostly far out of
date and need of overhaul.

Agreed, that's probably sufficient. I think if I wasn't on the board
I'd probably want to know more details about what we do and how to
contact us. It might also be valuable to have our voting process
publically documented somewhere, but we can take care of that next time
we do a vote.
I have added a couple of sentences to the About page. I agree we need to
describe our organizational structure somewhere including a copy of our
agreement with SFC.
Anyway, +1 for dropping the page in favor of something simple for
now.
If anyone wants to write up a replacement to explain to the public who
we are, go for it; I'll be happy to copyedit and offer ideas.
Let's see if I can't come up with something in the next week or two.
