gcj is the precise opposite of a JVM. The only useful free software Java _VM_ in existence is IKVM ... and that depends on .net/mono ...
my mistake: I should have said there 'classpath' as it is the common ground of various free Java implementations (http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath/stories.html#jvm)
I know gcj is not a JVM, but it proved in the case of OpenOffice.org it can effectively replace a JVM
