Another observation is that if one of the children is visible, then the parent's geometry is listed. Is there a specific reason for this feature? Or is it a bug?
I wrote the --query-all switch years ago, it's the sum total of my contribution to the C code base :-} Anyway, hiddenness wasn't considered and I suspect the patterns you're seeing are due to Inkscape's tree iteration code.
