Okay - it's still a little random really - I would have to watch top and write the numbers down on paper - is there no way to spool those two columns out to a file for the inkscape process?

Maybe you can write regularly the output of a filtered "ps aux" to a file. Something like : while 1; do ps aux | grep inkscape >> logfile sleep 60; done
