Of course a modifier key isn't very obvious, though it definitely reduces confusion. To mitigate the visibility problem the widget could have a tooltip mentioning the modifier.
In GIMP the sliders are thicker, so there is room for the three modes (and the cursor changes indicating them), but in inkscape they have been made thinner, so it's hard to use them.
The sliders thicker would also mitigate the problem a bit. Though as Michael pointed out earlier the text input field is still hard to hit. (FWIW GIMP has the same problem.)
I'm not a regular GIMP user, though I assume their slider implementation already exists longer than the one in Inkscape. So before making a change to the existing widget, I believe someone of the Inkscape team should contact the GIMP team and ask for whether they got positive or negative feedback about that widget.
