Hello David! Really nice work on the icons. I really like the idea to distinguish groups of icons in the top toolbox with color so that one can more easily see what tool he/she is using.
Since Inkscape tries to follow the Gnome Human Interface Guidelines, are you intrested in applying the icon section guidelines on your new icon set (http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/icons.html)? The things that comes to mind is the black outline and the light source. I myself has a strong intrest in having a more hig-look for the icons (in the gnome-build anyway) and will probably redraw a bunch of them on myself on my own system if you choose to not follow the HIG and your set become the default one.
Speaking of icons, I had some thoughts about Inkscape and Gimps default theme. A lot of Gimps icons can be reused for Inkscape if they get svg-ized and it would probably be a great leap in usability for a graphic designer if both his/her photo manipulation software and vector drawing app shared the same icons. Adobe has a tradition of sharing the look of the tools in their suite and if Inkscape/Gimp/Scribus did the same it would be a good thing (yes, I know Scribus is a qt-app and probably wants to follow the kde-guidelines...but I belive something could be done to solve this).
