Hmm, I guess I could live with ctrl+w
- If a dialog is open but focus is on canvas and you need to access
that dialog again, currently you only need to press that dialog's shortcut once to move focus to it. With your proposal, you will have to press it twice (once to close it and then again to reopen it) which is slow and counterintuitive.
- "Dialogs on top" do not work for everyone. So, if a dialog is active
but is not seen (below the canvas), pressing its shortcut to close it has no visible effect, which is extremely confusing.
I agree with the above, but the way I imagined this would be implemented was that the dialog would only be able to be closed with the relevant shortcut if it has focus, if not, then indeed it should just give it focus and bring it to the front.
So essentially, it's not really a toggle but more of a change of behaviour of the shortcut key depending on wether the dialog has focus. I can only speak for myself (I've done no usability studies, nor ever read one :p), but this is the first thing I tried when I was new to Inkscape and started getting dialogs in the way
But in the end it doesn't really matter because I just realised ctrl+w works pretty well, so feel free to disregard this reply :)
