Try running 'top' in a terminal. It should give you idea whether the slowness comes from heavy CPU usage (the CPU column) or from memory exhaustion (the MEM column) and if latter, what % of memory gets eaten before the slowness starts.
Okay - it's still a little random really - I would have to watch top and write the numbers down on paper - is there no way to spool those two columns out to a file for the inkscape process?
