For some LPE's the red path is disabled, as it can be confusing (lpe
Spiro). But it should work for others, otherwise (from what I understand
from your question) it is a bug. Sorry, I can't check right now.

There is no red line for Bend Path and Pattern Along Path (the ones I
checked). The nodes are there and one can drag the invisible path so it
is probably a bug. I'll file a bug report if it's not fixed in a day or
so.
