eventually you made it completely transparent. Now, every rectangle you draw will be transparent, until you change it. Oh, you changed it to blue? Now every rectangle will be blue, until you change one.

For what it's worth, this is actually one of the numerous features of Inkscape that I like. It irks me each time I have to use Illustrator to have tools revert to stupid presets I never asked for. And I'm not a developer.
