There could be small icons (for example color wheels with a hand) next to the style indicators for stroke and fill. Dragging on them would trigger the color gesture behavior while dragging on the color indicators would drag & drop the style. The color wheel icons could have a tooltip explaining how they work.
My suggestions are mainly motivated by the fact that Inkscape gets a lot of praise for its simple yet powerful UI, which is very easy to learn even for the beginners. The color gestures take over the style swatch and there is no outside indication for this functionality, so I think it may be beginner-unfriendly. In other words, the feature is good but it's put in a strange place in the UI.
