I encountered a file that causes InkScape to crash on my machine (WinXP) whenever I open it. It doesn't matter whether I open it from Explorer or through File\Open, it even crashes as soon as it tries to generate a preview in the open file box (if I select it in the file list instead of typing in the filename myself).
I've looked into it, and the <animate> element is some ancient code that was only partically implemented. It doesn't crash on my system, but it does set a lot of things to null.
We might look into things in more detail, and that will take some debugging on Windows. in the mean time I'm inclined to just disable it soon if I don't hit an obvious problem.
