I have libgc 6.7 installed, so I'm not certain why Inkscape doesn't like it. Any
ideas?
Please check with "ldconfig -v |grep libgc" which of these is
in your LDPATH and in which order. Try again after it, since you
might have forgotten ldconfig anyway after make install of libgc.
